Impetigo is a skin infection that causes painful sores and blisters. It is mainly a childhood disease, but it is something that parents definitely want to pay attention to because it is highly contagious. There are two forms of the illness. Primary impetigo is when the infection causes sores and blisters on what would normally be healthy skin.

This can happen when someone is exposed to bacteria. Secondary impetigo is when the infection happens as the result of another skin condition like eczema. The good news is, this usually clears up in a few days, and it is not very serious. Your child may have sores around the mouth, hands, arms, and feet with light brown crust around the edge. There are also some really great natural ways that you can treat this bacterial infection. Let’s take a look at eight of them.

1. Grapefruit Seed Extract

The grapefruit seed extract is a well-known soldier in the battle to fight candida infections and fungal infections. In addition, grapefruit seed extract can also fight the Staphylococcus bacterial infection known as MRSA. This makes it the perfect candidate for treating impetigo. There are lots of ways that you can use grapefruit seed extract. You can add it to a beverage such as tea or to your food, you can use it as essential oil on the skin itself or you can make it into a poultice.

At least one study conducted in the United Kingdom found that a combination of grapefruit seed extract and geranium oil had the greatest antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus bacterial infections like MRSA. Although this bacterial infection is a little bit different, the result is often the same, and getting all the help you can get to eliminate this skin disease is definitely what you want.

2. Ginger

Ginger is another terrific herb that can be used to fight a bacterial infection. The great thing about Ginger is that you can simply go down to your local grocery store and buy Ginger. From there, you can use it in a huge variety of ways. You can grind it up and make it into a poultice and then apply it directly to the skin, or you can make a tea out of it and drink it.

The whole point is to eliminate the bacteria that is causing the illness, and that is going to be mostly on the outside of the body. So while drinking it is tea can be somewhat helpful, the best way to use Ginger is to apply it directly to the source you are experiencing. You definitely don’t want to go with straight Ginger on the sores because of how much flavoring there is with this particular herb. You have probably noticed how potent Ginger is if you’ve chopped it up and put it in a juice drink or used in your cooking.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Another terrific way to treat a bacterial infection is with Apple cider vinegar. This can be another really painful thing to put directly onto skin sores in the case of something like impetigo. However, Apple cider vinegar is really good at detoxifying the body and balance in the blood sugar as well as a number of other treatments. But you do not want to make a poultice out of the Apple cider vinegar to apply directly to the sores.

Instead, you want to pour the Apple cider vinegar directly over the blisters and lesions. This will hurt at first, but then you will notice a great deal of relief as the inflammation goes down. More importantly, whenever you pour apple cider vinegar over your sores, you are going to start an epic battle with the bacteria that are living there and hopefully kill as much of it is possible.

4. Turmeric

You may want to try turmeric as it is one of the herbal supplements out there that actually has some scientific research backing it up against the Staphylococcus infection. The Journal of Tropical Medicine recently showed in a study that turmeric has powerful antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus. However, there is more research that needs to be done before this can be fully understood.

But while scientists do their research, you can use it to reduce inflammation and itching from your sores and lesions. The best way to do this makes a few teaspoons of ground turmeric with a few tablespoons of coconut oil and then use a Q-tip or some other device to apply directly to the affected areas. You can then cover the area with a bandage to keep in the turmeric and avoid staining your clothing. You do this daily until the bacterial infection has been healed.

5. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a really terrific treatment for a bacterial infection. The way that you want to apply this is topical. The great thing about coconut oil is that it doesn’t job killing the bacteria and relieving pain and itching that comes from having the sores without actually causing you any pain like Apple cider vinegar might. It is the lauric acid in coconut oil that makes the skin able to resist certain pathogens like bacteria.

Basically, coconut oil is able to create an invisible barrier that prevents bacteria from getting into the skin. But it isn’t just bacteria; it also protects the skin from viruses, fungus and more. If you really want to get the most out of this treatment, combine it with something like tea tree oil that will kill the bacteria while protecting the skin with that invisible layer. You can also take coconut oil internally because it has properties that help boost the immune system and balance your hormones. During an infection like impetigo, fighting the infection on the inside is just as important as fighting it on the outside.

6. Manuka Honey

Honey, and Manuka honey, in particular, have antiviral and antifungal properties as well as antibacterial properties. In fact, it has some of the highest antimicrobial activity as well. With both children and adults, healing will go a lot faster if you use this particular supplement. That has even been shown in research conducted at the University of Wales Institute in the United Kingdom.

They found that when the Staphylococcus infection was exposed to Manuka honey the cell division process was interrupted. This meant that the growth of the illness slowed down considerably. You can use this in conjunction with another treatment that kills the bacteria while preventing any leftover bacteria from dividing. In fact, honey can be used in a wide variety of viruses, bacterial infections, and fungus.

7. Goldenseal

Goldenseal is another supplement that has been backed up by some research. This time the study comes from the University of North Carolina. If found that goldenseal was effective against skin infections. It was particularly effective against MRSA. Goldenseal is a leaf extract of the H. Canadensis plant. It also has a number of health benefits that can provide extremely powerful tools for fighting an infection both internally and externally.

You can apply directly at the site of the infection by creating a key and then creating a poultice out of the tea once it is cool and dabbing it over the lesions. In addition, you can make a separate tea or take goldenseal directly in order to boost your immune system. This will allow you to take the battle to two different fronts.

""

8. Tea Tree Oil

Finally, tea tree oil is one of the oldest remedies out there for infections. Long before people had antibiotics and other tools to fight infection, tea tree oil was used in traditional medicines. You may not be aware of just how many health benefits tea tree oil has, but it has been effective in treating conditions like ringworm, psoriasis, acne and of course, skin infections.

In fact, some studies have shown that a 5% tea tree oil extract was just as effective a treatment for skin infection as a prescription antibiotic when it came to treating streptococcus and MRSA. It is definitely going to be effective against something like impetigo and you can apply directly to your sores.
