When it comes to treating tonsillitis, there are a few different routes that you can take. Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils; which are two oval-shaped fleshy bits that are part of the throat. Tonsils were often removed in the past because they were not thought to have value, but sciences since learned that they are instrumental in keeping out the infection from those areas, so many doctors often go with other treatment options.

One of those treatment options happens to be antibiotics, but the problem is that tonsillitis can be caused by either a bacterial infection or a virus. Antibiotics are only going to work against bacterial infection, and antivirals are usually intended for a specific kind of virus. The good news is, your body is pretty much equipped to handle treating tonsillitis on its own, but you have to give it a boost sometimes. That’s where these natural remedies come in.

1. Avoiding Respiratory Irritants

One of the things that you can do is a natural remedy for tonsillitis is to avoid respiratory irritants altogether. For example, if you are around someone that smokes regularly indoors, then you may want to restrict their smoking to a certain room of the house or outside while you have tonsillitis.

Irritants like these can make your illness worse and make it last longer. Of course, cigarette smoke is not the only type of respiratory irritant that you can avoid to get over having tonsillitis faster. You may want to avoid allergens that normally cause swelling or make you sneeze because these can irritate the throat as well. You may also want to avoid using parts of town where you know there is heavy pollution because that can be an irritant on your throat as well and cause it to hurt for hours afterward.

2. Getting Enough Rest

Most people do not get nearly enough rest. But getting enough sleep is absolutely vital to your body’s healing processes. What happens when the body enters deep sleep, also known as REM sleep, is that all of the various systems throughout the body shut down to their bare minimum levels.

Your breathing becomes shallower, your brain no longer has to focus on interpreting visual signals from the eyes, your ears no longer have to worry about processing minor auditory signals and your organs can work slowly. Well, this means is you free up a great deal of energy that your body can then use to heal itself. Whether that illness is tonsillitis or something else entirely, getting enough rest is absolutely instrumental when it comes to releasing my blood cells and ensuring that they can do battle against whatever infection is inside your body.

Our bodies are made up mostly of water, and making sure you get enough in that your body is completely hydrated is not only one of the best ways that you can get over tonsillitis, it is also one of the best ways that you can prevent it from happening in the first place.

Water lubes up the body and makes processes work faster and better, it helps your organs perform at peak levels and allows nutrients to get to those areas faster through increased blood flow as well as oxygen. Water does dozens of amazing things for you physically, it keeps your body hydrated and it should definitely be one of the natural remedies that you use when you get sick. Even better would be following the guidelines on how many glasses you should be drinking per day based upon factors like your gender, height, and weight.

4. Eating Soft Non-Acidic Foods

You also want to stick to soft, nonacidic foods. With tonsillitis, you generally have read in inflamed tonsils with that painful redness spreading to other parts of the throat and esophagus. This often means that swallowing hard foods is going to be almost impossible. In fact, there is a real choking hazard if you tried to eat hard foods when your esophagus is inflamed.

You also want to go with nonacidic foods. Nonacidic foods are foods that are not more base than acid. Some of the most common examples of acidic foods out there include oranges and lemons. There are times that you can use acidic foods in the treatment of tonsillitis, as we will explain in the next section, but the main thing is to avoid using these acidic foods raw because the acid can irritate the esophagus and the inflamed areas that are being affected by tonsillitis.

5. Honey or Lemon

Honey or lemon can be wonderful things to use on a sore throat due to tonsillitis. The thing about lemon is, you want to use it to make a tea rather than eating it raw or rubbing it on an affected area. Acidic foods like lemon can actually irritate the tonsils and the esophagus when they are eaten raw. The same goes for oranges and other acidic fruits.

There is a long list of acidic foods that you should avoid if you want to avoid irritating red and inflamed areas and making them more painful. But making a tea from lemon or honey can actually have a pretty good soothing effect on painful areas infected by viral or bacterial tonsillitis. One thing you do want to keep in mind is that you should never use this treatment on children less than one year of age because they can develop botulism in the digestive system.

6. Warm Salt Water

Gargling with warm salt water can also have major benefits. Salt naturally reduces the information in helping to alleviate some of the pain you are feeling your throat. That’s why it is recommended to gargle saltwater when you have a sore throat or inflamed areas like the tonsils. Saltwater will offer immediate although temporary pain relief and the swelling will go down a bit.

Saltwater is not the only anti-inflammatory substance out there. There are lots of foods as well as herbal supplements that are anti-inflammatory, and any time you can bring the swelling down of your tonsils, throat, and esophagus, the more comfortable you are going to be. One common anti-inflammatory that everyone should have around the house is ibuprofen. Ibuprofen may not be as effective as applying anti-inflammatories directly to the affected areas but it is a good alternative in many cases.

7. Cold or Frozen Desserts

After a tonsillectomy, children are often promised all the ice cream that they can eat. That’s because not only is extremely soothing to their sore throat, but it also gives them used to eating once again and is a soft food that can be used as a meal replacement until their esophagus and throat begin healing.

Of course, there is a lot of sugar in these frozen treats, so many parents balk at giving them to their children whenever they want even after a tonsillectomy or while they are healing from tonsillitis. However, there are healthy alternatives to this. For example, flavored coconut water can be used to make homemade popsicles better delicious and healthy. There are also Hawaiian punch packets out there that taste really good and have zero sugar and only about 1 cal for a pitcher made from the entire packet.

8. OTC Pain Medications

Adding OTC pain medications to the rest of your natural remedies may actually have a pretty significant impact. Most people want to avoid over-the-counter pain medications and go with healthy alternatives if possible, but the thing about tonsillitis is that it is a very painful condition that makes it difficult to heal because you are always feeling uncomfortable and in pain.

But when you use over-the-counter pain medications, especially anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen, then you get a great deal of relief from that pain and you are able to concentrate more on the rest of the healing. The only difficulty with taking these pain medications is you may have to find a liquid form such as a flea medication that contains them because it can be almost impossible to swallow pills or capsules with tonsillitis.

""

9. Drink Green Tea

The symptoms of swelling and inflammation in the throat due to tonsillitis infection makes swallowing painful. The pain symptoms may be so uncomfortable that some patients describe it as eating razor blades.

Drinking hot beverages can help to soothe the sensation of a raw throat, but what you drink makes a difference. Drinking herbal teas gives you a dose of polyphenol antioxidants from the tea material, allowing you to benefit from the health advantages of that specific herb or plant.

Green tea is one of our favorite varieties to soothe inflammation associated with bacterial and viral infections. The leaves contain polyphenol catechins, Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which have potent anti-inflammatory properties.

Drink a cup or two or green tea throughout the day to benefit from the anti-inflammatory effect of EGCG. To give the tea an additional boost of anti-bacterial power, add a teaspoon or two of raw honey and mix well before drinking hot.

10. Suck Lozenges

The pain and inflammation symptoms associated with tonsillitis infection can become severe in the advanced stages of the disease. The patient may gain some relief from sucking on lozenges. In most cases, these lozenges contain mild anesthetic compounds, such as benzocaine.

However, should the person not wish to use pharmaceutical products for personal reasons, there are natural alternatives. Some health manufacturers use ingredients like licorice root extract, and clove oil may help to reduce symptoms of pain and inflammation.

Licorice is a trusted natural anesthetic that has an extensive history of use in traditional medicine. Native to the lands of Southern Asia and Eastern Europe, health manufacturers now grow the plant in commercial operations to harvest the roots, which they turn into oil extract.

The extraction goes into a variety of natural supplements and herbal remedies to help reduce symptoms of pain and inflammation. Try sucking on lozenges when your throat feels raw.

11. Ice Your Throat

It’s a well-known fact that ice helps to reduce the pain and swelling symptoms if you sprain your ankle or bump your head. So, why not use ice to treat these same symptoms in your throat? If you place your hand over the patient’s throat, you’ll notice that it emanates heat, and feels very soft – as if there is some fluid building under the skin.

Treat these symptoms with an ice pack. Take a bag of frozen peas or some ice and wrap it in a dishtowel to prevent a freeze-burn occurring on the neck. Then let the patient ice their throat. It’s time to remove the ice pack when the patient starts to feel uncomfortable. Let the skin temperature return to normal, and then ice the throat again.

Repeat this treatment as often as necessary to relieve symptoms of pain and swelling associated with tonsillitis infection. Avoid feeding kids, ice creams, and ice-pops. While the cool treat may provide some instant relief, the sugar in the popsicle will prolong the infection.

12. Apple Cider Vinegar Gargle

Patients who are dealing with bacterial or viral forms of tonsillitis can benefit from using an ACV gargle. Apple cider vinegar has potent antimicrobial, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial properties that make it ideal for fighting the effects of tonsillitis.

Gargling with pure vinegar is not an option. The sharp taste and smell of the ACV will make you gag if you try to use it on its own. It’s best to take two tablespoons of ACV and add them to 2-ounces of water. Gargle on and off for as long as possible, and repeat the treatment two or three times a day for best results.

Apple cider vinegar gets its beneficial properties from bacteria as well – but the good kind of bacteria. In every bottle of unrefined, unfiltered, raw ACV, there is a beneficial bacterium that you’ll notice hanging in suspension. Known as, “the mother,” this bacterium helps to reduce systemic inflammation and prevent infection while providing a hostile environment for the replication and spread of the existing pathogen.

13. Humidifiers

Patients with tonsillitis may gain tremendous benefit from using a diffuser while they sleep. Diffusers produced heated steam throughout the night while you sleep. As a result, the humidity in the room increases, allowing you to breathe more comfortably while relieving the symptoms of swelling and pain associated with tonsillitis.

It’s best to add a few drops of essential oil to the water reservoir of your diffuser. The essential oil enters the water and ends up in the steam, where it opens your airways and throat. The polyphenols in the oil go to work in soothing your symptoms while you sleep.

Various types of essential oil can help with relieving the symptoms of inflammation and pain associated with tonsillitis infection. Try some eucalyptus oil blended with tea tree oil for the best effects. Other oils you can add to the reservoir include lavender and olbas oil. If the patient complains about a dry throat in the morning, you can keep the humidifier running during the day as well.

14. Avoid Aspirin in Children

It’s quite common for children to develop tonsillitis between the ages of 2 and 5-years old. Concerned parents will book an appointment with their doctor, but since the infection is not life-threatening, it may be a few hours before you can get to see the physician.

As a result, some parents may try to assist their child’s pain symptoms by treating them with ORTC medications to relieve the pain and inflammation. However, under no circumstances should you ever give Aspirin to a child under the age of 18-years old.

When young people take Aspirin, they run the risk of developing, “Reyes Syndrome,” a severe condition related to Aspirin use that leads to swelling on the brain and in the liver. In some cases, patients may experience life-threatening results from developing the disease, and it may persist for many years.

If your child is sick and you don’t have any home remedies on hand, take them to the emergency room for immediate care from a medical professional.
