An infection caused by a fungus, the so-called Jock Itch gets its name due to the fact that it is commonly seen amongst active people who tend to sweat profusely during sports. Despite the name though, anyone can develop this infection, in much the same way that one doesn’t have to be an athlete in order to develop the Athlete’s foot.

Redness, flakiness, peeling, or cracking of the skin are amongst the symptoms of Jock Itch, with the groin, thigh, and buttocks area most likely to affect. The associated rash can be circular in appearance with a clearly defined or slightly raised edge. Often itchy, stingy, and uncomfortable, Jock Itch is no laughing matter for anyone struggling to fight it off.

A fungus that thrives in damp and warm environments, the condition isn’t usually dangerous, though it is contagious and so getting it under control is a priority for anyone with the condition. Here are 8 simple steps to help achieve that.

1. Keep the groin area clean

It sounds like it should be so simple, keeping the groin area nice and clean, yet so many people negate this seemingly obvious task. Wearing the same pair of underpants for a couple of days straight is one sure-fire way to keep the groin area dirty, and for a lot of athletes in college, this laundry averse technique is well used. For many, it isn’t a problem, until it is.

Aside from wearing the same pair of briefs for a few consecutive days being disgusting, it is also conducive to the development of the condition causing fungus. It’s basic personal hygiene essentially, but washing the body daily, and after exercise, is a simple way of ensuring that the groin area is kept squeaky clean. If you haven’t got time for a shower, or if facilities are limited, a quick stand up wash with a couple of baby wipes won’t hurt as an alternative every now and then, just don’t allow this to become the norm.

""

2. Keep the groin area dry

If this seems like an especially pedantic follow up to the last simple step, good, it should do, and if you’re reading this and thinking that it’s stating the obvious, well done to you. Unfortunately, however, the actual cleaning stage of personal hygiene is not always followed up with a careful period of drying time. It’s so simple yet so often ignored.

One reason could be down to embarrassment in the locker room, with people wanting to cover themselves up as quickly as possible. Everyone is different and anyone who laughs at the size of someone else’s manhood or the shape of someone else’s butt is probably feeling pretty self-conscious about their own body. Ignore it and put the towel to good use.

Sometimes, failing to dry off properly can be down to pure laziness, and for this, there can be no excuse. If your clothes are spotting with wet patches as you put them on, you’re not actually dry.

""

3. Use clean towels and avoid sharing clothing and towels

Doing the laundry for a lot of folks can seem like too much of a chore, meaning that the same towel is kept in the same sweaty old gym bag for days and weeks on end. Just think about what a potential breeding ground this creates for all the little infection-causing nasty creatures and fungi. This is their ideal environment, so don’t provide them with it.

Bite the bullet and ensure the laundry room, as this is a very simple step to avoid Jock Itch. Who knows? You may even bump into a little hottie in the laundry room. You’ve never been there before, so how would you know? Think about how impressive that would look, a big strong guy doing his own laundry. The bonus here is that you get some nice clean towels to use, every time to train or work out.

Also, avoid sharing towels with anyone else, no matter how much of a good buddy they are. Sharing towels is just gross, fact.

""

4. Wash athletic supporters (jockstraps) as often as possible

In the case of a jockstrap, as often as possible should really mean after every single use. Think about where it has been! If you were a jockstrap, you’d probably want to take a bath in bleach every single time you’d spent a couple of hours in close proximity to someone’s gooch.

Now, your jockstrap is an inanimate object of course, but it still deserves the same respect if you’re intent on following some of the earlier simple steps about maintaining a clean and dry groin area. It really isn’t all that hard to ensure your jockstrap is regularly cleaned. Simply toss it in with the rest of the laundry you’ve now become accustomed to doing on a regular basis.

If washing the jockstrap is something that you simply can’t get your head around, at least buy a couple of jockstraps to vary between. Your backside (and our jockstrap) will thank you later.

""

5. Avoid tight-fitting clothing

This is often a hard one for athletes to adhere to, given the tight-fitting nature of a football uniform for instance. The shoulder pads on personal protective gear increase the tightness too. Another example is taken from the world of cycling. Lance Armstrong might not have been nearly as successful if he’s attempted a climbing stage whilst wearing baggy pants and an oversized hoody.

OK, maybe there were a few more factors at play for Lance, but his tightly fitted yellow vest certainly helped with the streamlining. If it’s absolutely unavoidable to wear tight clothes whilst competing or training, then loose-fitting clothing should be worn outside of these times, to give your skin a break. Let it all hang loose when you’re not in-game mode.

Friction and chafing are the enemies of Jocks everywhere. It’s a bit of head-scratcher to try and name a sport or athletic event where tight-fitting clothing isn’t pretty essential to come to think of it. Even when swimming, there might not be a lot of clothing, but what little there is, is pretty darn tight.

""

6. Change clothing, especially underwear, every day

Touched on briefly at an earlier point, changing your underwear at least once a day shouldn’t really need to appear on an advice list if your parents raised you well enough. It’s just a no brainer, even without considering the dreaded Jock Itch. Whether your aims for the day are to get lucky, or simply to cruise on through to home time in the most comfort possible, a clean pair of undies could be the foundation to your success. It will certainly keep Jock Itch at bay.

Your Granny probably used to tell you to always wear clean underpants. The story that usually goes with this is that if you were to get hit by a bus, at least you’d go to the hospital (or the morgue) with your decency intact.

It’s hard to imagine being overly concerned with what you have on downstairs, assuming you’ve just been made into a pancake, but at least following this easy piece of advice will help build up your defenses against Jock Itch. Buy more pants.

""

7. Treat any other fungal infections, such as Athlete’s foot

If you’re an athlete, chances are that you either have athlete’s foot or that you’ve had it in the past. Seeing as Jock Itch can be caused by Athlete’s foot fungi transferring to other parts of the body, you’re going to need to ensure you treat Athlete’s foot as soon as it develops. That goes for any other fungal infection you might suffer from too.

Ignoring it is just plain nasty. In the case of Athlete’s foot, you need to make sure that you dry your fungus filled feet with a completely separate towel. Once they’re fully dry, you can put your socks on before your clean underwear, to make sure that the gruesome fungus from your feet doesn’t have a chance to get on the underwear. If this happens you could find that your body starts to resemble an old oak tree, with fungi sprouting from anywhere it can take hold. Once this happens, it’s only a matter of time before the raccoons move in. You have been warned.

""

8. Use a powder daily

Talcum powder or similar, it’s all good. You want to aid and prolong that drying process, particularly in the groin area, by applying a liberal sprinkling of powder to your groin area after washing. This needs to be done on a daily basis for the maximum fungus resisting effects to be successful. It really isn’t hard to maintain, just build it in as part of your daily washing routine.

If you don’t have a daily washing routine, there isn’t much hope for you in terms of avoiding Jock Itch. If you find yourself unlucky enough to develop Jock Itch then there are two things to consider. Number one is to ask yourself if you’re too disgusting to changes, and number two is to consider how to get rid of it.

For Jock Itch, prevention is pretty much the same as the cure, in that the above 8 measures can do two things. They can keep Jock Itch from developing in the first place, and they can help to get rid of it in the eventuality that it shows up.

""

9. Restore Bacterial Balance

As mentioned, jock itch occurs due to a bacterial or fungal imbalance on the skin. When our natural fungi and bacteria become overwhelmed by harmful bacteria, it starts to produce the symptoms of redness and itching associated with the condition. If you want to end the symptoms of itching and irritation associated with jock itch, then you’ll need to restore the bacterial or fungal balance in your skin.

The best way to store bacterial balance is by using a specialized cream. This cream restores the natural fungi and bacteria on your skin while eliminating the other harmful bacteria and pathogens. It may surprise you to learn that the same fungi responsible for athletes foot are often the same pathogens responsible for causing jock itch.

Therefore, it’s possible to get rid of jock itch using the same cream used to eliminate athlete’s foot. Rub the cream into the affected area twice a day, and you should notice tremendous relief from your itching symptoms.

""

10. Use Probiotics

Bacterial and fungal imbalances often occur due to issues with the digestive system. It may surprise you to learn that 70% of the immune system resides in the GI tract. As a result, a compromised immune system leads to the development of numerous bacterial and fungal imbalances throughout the body. Unfortunately, a bad bacterial imbalance in the gut may lead to the overgrowth of harmful fungi, such as candida.

Bacterial imbalance in the gut may lead to the development of a bacterial and fungal imbalance on the skin as well. In such a case, it’s typical for this imbalance to show up as jock itch, especially if the person who is tight-fitting underwear or does not have the best hygiene habits.

Fortunately, you can change your bacterial balance by changing what you eat. Consuming healthy foods and avoiding refined carbohydrates and sugar, is the best way to begin rebuilding your immune system. Consume food such as papaya, pineapple, kefir, and other cultured dairy products. These foods will help to build the bacteria in your gut, eliminating the irritation symptoms associated with jock itch.

""

11. Avoid Refined Carbohydrates

As mentioned, the digestive system plays a significant role in managing the fungal and bacterial balance within the body. Therefore, what we play also makes a difference in the health of our digestive tract. When we consume foods little high in refined carbohydrates, such as sugar, we increase the amount of systemic inflammation circulating in the body.

Refined carbohydrates cause inflammation of the intestinal wall. This action allows inflammatory cytokines to spread throughout the bloodstream, affecting every other biological system within the body. To reduce systemic inflammation, we need to start changing our diet. Eating the probiotic foods mentioned above is a good start. However, you’ll have to make sure that you avoid all forms of refined carbohydrates in the future to maintain good gut health.

By reducing systemic information comma and ensuring that your digestive system is in good condition, you should avoid experiencing the bacterial and fungal and bands of the skin that results in jock itch.

""

12. Use Medications

Without the use of topical medications, the affected individual may find that their jock itch symptoms stick around for weeks or months at a time. It’s challenging to eliminate jock itch once it starts, and if you notice it beginning to spread throughout the groin, then you’re dealing with the severe problem that requires immediate attention.

Severe cases of jock itch may require medical intervention with over-the-counter remedies and medicines. One of the more common creams used in the management and elimination of jock itch is the same cream used to treat athletes foot.

This topical administration allows you to rebalance the bacteria and fungi on the skin, helping to reduce the symptoms of irritation and swelling associated with the condition. Topical creams and other preparations should include the following medications.
