Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a fairly common herpes virus. However, often the symptoms are extremely subtle or do not even manifest all which can make it difficult to know that you have this virus. However, the virus can remain dormant in your system and it can actually turn very serious during pregnancy or in a few other cases.

The official name for it is the human herpesvirus five or cytomegalovirus and according to the CDC, more than half of the adults in the United States are infected with this virus by age 40. It does not target any specific gender, race or age group. Let’s take a look at some of the common symptoms of the cytomegalovirus. CMV does have some symptoms that you should pay attention to to decide whether or not you should see your doctor or try to get this condition treated in some other way.

CMV is divided into three basic sets: the standard infection, reoccurring CMV and congenital CMV. Let’s take a look at a couple of symptoms in each of these categories that are the most common. In the standard infection category, there may be no symptoms at all. This is why this particular illness is so insidious.

When you have this disease, and you do not know that you have it because you are not experiencing any symptoms or your symptoms are so mild that you attribute them to something else entirely, it can be a dangerous road to travel if you happen to have an infection or are pregnant and you do not know that you have this particular illness. However, most of the time, this is not the case. Most of the time, when you have the disease with no symptoms, your body can easily get rid of it.

2. Standard Sore Throat

Another standard symptom of CMV is a regular sore throat. This is a symptom that you get when you have a cold in the winter or fall, and it is a symptom that most people are pretty familiar with. Having a sore throat can be annoying, but it is in no way completely debilitating, and you can usually get through your day pretty well with the sore throat.

If you do want to soothe your sore throat, there are some ways to do that including natural remedies like honey and cucumber as well as many of the over-the-counter medications that you can get resort throat as well. For example, there is sore throat spray the U use to numb the sore throat and make you feel better as well as lozenges that arty have that medication within them like lemon balm or cherry flavored with menthol that cools down the throat and makes it feel better.

3. Standard: Swollen Glands

Swollen glands are pretty much indicative of a cold, and you will notice that if you have a cold or some sort of infection, that your doctor will often check your glands. What you may not know is that swollen glands can also be one of the indicators for CMV as well. Checking for swollen glands is something that you can do yourself you know what to look for.

You want to feel on the front part of your neck slightly off to the side if you press in there you will be able to feel the meaty part that is your glands. Normally these are not swollen up and you have to press your fingers and a little bit in order to feel them. 4. Reoccurring: Floaters, Blind Spots, Blurred Vision

With reoccurring CMV, there might come a variety of vision problems. This does not usually happen during a single instance of the illness, but someone that has recurring CMV may experience the symptoms eventually, and it is a good indication that you should get checked out with your doctor. One of the vision problems that you may experience is floaters.

Floaters are little specks in your field of vision that move around slowly. They are due to tiny specks in your eye that are difficult to see him even more difficult to remove. 5. Reoccurring: Shortness of Breath, Pneumonia with Hypoxia

Another set of symptoms for CMV includes shortness of breath and pneumonia – especially pneumonia that includes hypoxia. Hypoxia is a condition where the body is deprived of the oxygen that usually gets or is supposed to be getting. With shortness of breath, you may have trouble completing tasks that she used to easily complete without having trouble.

6. Congenital: Hearing Loss

When it comes to congenital CMV, which is CMV that is passed on to the fetus before it is born, hearing loss can be a symptom. However, it is important to keep in mind that approximately 85% to 90% of babies that are born with CMV will have no symptoms whatsoever. But even among those who do not have symptoms, approximately 10% to 15% of them experience hearing loss at some later date.

This almost always happens within the first six months of life, and the hearing loss is a symptom that only occurs with congenital CMV. Of course, hearing loss can be extremely debilitating and devastating on its own, but it is also something that can lead to other problems such as speech and communication problems later in life due to the inability to hear correctly during the very first developmental stages.

7. Congenital: Epilepsy, Seizures, and Problems with Coordination

Certain symptoms such as neurological symptoms can happen with congenital CMV as well. One of these neurological symptoms is epilepsy. Epilepsy is a condition that causes the brain to react in unusual ways and can cause seizures. You can have seizures without actually having epilepsy though, and that can sometimes happen with congenital CMV as well.

In addition to these two conditions, people with congenital CMV can have trouble with coordination. Some of that is due to hearing loss if that was something that they experienced as a symptom of their congenital CMV, but it could also have a neurological component. In as many as 75% of babies born with congenital CMV, the brain will be impacted in some way and it will lead to problems later in life.

8. Congenital: Autism

Autism can also be a result of CMV. Although there is not a great deal that is known yet about autism, and even less that is known about the link between autism and CMV, researchers have noticed a pattern between congenital CMV and those children that develop autism symptoms later in life. There is a lot more to be aware of when it comes to congenital CMV as well, so you definitely want to make sure that your doctor tests for it as soon as possible.

Congenital CMV can result in cognitive difficulties, learning disabilities, vision problems, hearing loss, epilepsy, impaired physical coordination, autism and much more. Any responsible parent will want to be aware of the risks in understanding what to look for so that they can report back to their doctor right away if they suspect that their baby has CMV.
