Most people do not really consider how important our lungs really are when it comes to keeping us well and strong. The truth is that like the rest of the body the lungs also need daily attention and care.

Breathing provides oxygen to all of the cells in the body. When there is not enough oxygen a person is more prone to developing health issues. This includes chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respiratory illnesses, pulmonary edema, which is where fluid builds up in the lungs.

Regular breathing is not enough to keep oxygen going through the body. At rest, the lungs are typically only at about half their capacity. Like other parts of the body, the lungs thrive with activity and movement. Here are 8 things that you can do to keep your lungs healthy and prevent pulmonary edema and other diseases of the lungs.

1. Diaphragmatic Breathing

One of the things that you can do in order to keep the lungs functioning properly is to practice some simple breathing techniques. These techniques can be used by people who have developed lung issues related to chronic bronchitis, pulmonary edema, emphysema, and asthma.

Healthy individuals can use these techniques to help prevent these illnesses from occurring. Diaphragmatic breathing involves being aware of the muscles of the diaphragm. The diaphragm muscles are what separate the organs located in the abdomen from the lungs. Concentrate on the lowering of the diaphragm as you take a deep breath. this will provide you with a deeper inhale. Doing this regularly can help to increase the capacity of the lungs.

Many professional singers use this type of breathing in order to help them increase their lung capacity so that they can sing notes for longer. Stronger lungs are better at fighting infections and increase the oxygen levels in the body.

2. Deep Breathing Exercises

One way to get your lungs closer to reaching their full capacity is to simply breathe deeply. When you start to inhale you will want to be conscious of the belly.

Make sure that you are aware of the lowering of the diaphragm. Expand the ribs to allowing them to open like they are wings. Next, allow the upper part of the chest to expand and lift up. Taking the time each day to take some deep breaths can be very good for the health of your lungs. Not only is deep breathing stretching the lungs and making them work harder, but it also is providing the body with an oxygen boost. This can be beneficial to your health in many ways.

In addition, deep breathing exercises can be very calming. If you are feeling stressed or anxious about something, taking a few deep breaths can help to alleviate these feelings.

3. Counting Breaths

Another way that you can increase the strength of your lungs and decrease your risk of developing pulmonary edema is to simply count your breaths. To do this you will first want to count how long one of your natural breaths takes.

First, count when you regularly inhale and exhale. Once you know about where your regular breathing lies on the number scale, you can then count your breaths with intention. Breathe in and count to at least five. Then exhale on a count of five as well. This allows you to focus on your breathing and will help to increase the capacity of the lungs.

Once you are breathing comfortably to a count of five in and five out, increase the count by one. Keep adding in a count until you are comfortable with the amount of time it takes to both fills and empties the lungs.

4. Posture

Most people have been told that posture is important. What many people do not realize is that while good posture is good for the back and other muscles of the body, good posture also goes a long way when it comes to your lungs.

Remember, your lungs are only going to be able to expand to the amount of room that is made for them. If you are sitting all day and you are hunched over, your lungs are not going to be working at their full capacity. One simple trick that you can do in order to provide your lungs with more room is to sit in a stable chair and lean back slightly.

When you are in this position, lift the chest up and then open up the front part of your body as you take several deep breaths. This will help the lungs expand to their full capacity.

5. Hydration

When it comes to the health of the body in general, getting enough water is one of the most important things that you can do. Staying hydrated is not only healthy for your general well-being, but it is also important for the lungs.

When you take in fluids throughout the day it helps to keep the mucosal linings of the lung thin. When the lining remains thin the lungs are going to function much better. When your body is not properly hydrated it can cause many health issues including pulmonary edema. This is why it is important to make sure that you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

Regular moderate activity can also help the lungs. When you increase the activity that you do throughout the day you are going to get three things done all at once, a healthy heart, healthy lungs, and you will be in a better overall mood.

6. Laughing

Have you ever heard the saying that laughter is the best medicine? There is some science behind this saying as laughing is very good for your body. Not only does laughing improve your mood overall, but it also helps to work the abdominal muscles. Working the abdominal muscles regularly can help to improve the capacity of the lungs.

In addition, laughter can help to clear out the lungs as it forces out some of the stale air that may be in the lungs already and allows more fresh air to enter the lungs. As you are laughing the lungs are expanded and the fresh air has more room to enter different areas of the lungs.

If you are looking for a fun way to help prevent pulmonary edema as well as other breathing and health issues of the lungs, try laughing more frequently. Your lungs and your body will thank you for it.

7. Stay Active

Everyone knows that being active is important for their overall health. After all, exercise is one of the best ways to strengthen every area of the body. Increasing your activity can help to improve the health of your lungs as well.

Moderate, intense movement is wonderful for the lungs. When you increase the number of activities that you are doing throughout the day, you are going to find that your heart and lungs are going to be more healthy as well. In addition, exercise goes a long way toward improving your mood. When you are in a better mood you are more likely to make better choices.

It is recommended that you try to get at least 20 minutes of regular, moderately intense movement each day. A brisk walk or taking a bike ride are simple ways to ensure that you are getting the recommended amount of activity per day.

8. Breathing Clubs

If you are suffering from pulmonary edema or some other type of illness of the lungs, it can be difficult to be active. When you are not able to breathe properly for whatever reason, even the smallest daily tasks can become quite labor-intensive.

One thing that you may want to consider if you are suffering from a disease of the lungs is to join a breathing club. A breathing club is a support group for people who are suffering from breathing and other lung issues. Breathing clubs can be great even if you are currently healthy. These clubs will help you work on different breathing techniques.

The clubs will also provide you with encouragement as well as information about what you can do to improve your overall quality of life if you are living with any type of illness that makes the lungs not function properly.
