A skin condition caused by the presence of too much yeast or fungi in the body, Tinea Versicolor can be aggravated or worsened by certain elements of a person’s diet. Yeast is a well-known resident on the skin, however, too much yeast can cause pigment changes, which are a characteristic trait of the condition.

Any food that can provide a substrate to facilitate the growth of yeast, can negatively affect the condition, leading to further pigmentation issues of the skin.

The 8 pieces of dietary advice listed here are advisory only and are all based on either certain scientific elements, or obtained via the experiences of people living with the condition, and in particular how they have found changes to their diet to be of at least some benefit. In many cases, complete abstinence is advised, however, there are some tweaks and minor adjustments that can prove beneficial as well.

1. Sugar

Abundant in far many more food sources than the vast majority of people are aware of, sugar can exist in both complex and simple forms. Consumed within the carbohydrates of a diet. The simpler forms of sugar have much less fiber and protein in, and as such are very easily transformed into sugar that is suitable for fuelling yeast overgrowth. This is obviously problematic for people living with this condition.

Sugar is regularly attributed to being one of the initial categories of food that has to be eliminated from a diet as early as possible if positive results are to be observed. Getting rid of sugar is not as easy as people might think, with many Americans being secretly addicted to sugar, however subtle changes, such as the removal of sugar from hot beverages or the cessation of the practice of sprinkling sugar over cereal, can make a big difference.

2. Baked goods

Any type of food that requires the use of a baker’s yeast in order to allow the dough to rise can be classed as ‘baked goods’. Unfortunately for people living with Tinea Versicolor, that includes all the good stuff. Yep, that’s right, we’re talking about bread, cakes, pizzas, pastries and all that other good stuff besides.

It just doesn’t seem fair, however, it may well be necessary and a positive change in a person’s diet. Made from ground grains, these food kinds of stuff are classed as a type of carbohydrate, but are also crucially infused with yeast product, which can make all the difference when it comes to affecting the skin.

There are alternatives that can come in and jazz up a diet, but there really is no getting away from the fact that bread made with yeast replacement, just doesn’t come anywhere near to being as good as a traditionally made loaf.

3. Vinegar

Most condiments, including the likes of salad dressings, ketchup, and mayonnaise contain vinegar. Vinegar is also used on its own, either as a flavoring on top of fries or as a dipping sauce for Italian dishes. The problem with vinegar for sufferers of this particular skin condition is that it is extremely concentrated in terms of its yeast-like byproducts and toxins.

It could be a difficult element to completely remove from any diet, given that many restaurants and cafes serve dishes with a sauce as standard, however trying your best to limit it could help in calming the skin condition down. Barley malt, also, should be avoided, and its presence in foods such as cereals, crackers, and bread means that it is a far more common ingredient than most might think. Either way, vinegar, and barley malt both promote yeast growth, so get them out of there. Entirely if at all possible.

4. Fruit

A source of the naturally occurring sugar known as fructose, fruits can be problematic for the Tinea Versicolor sufferer for a number of reasons. Whilst fruit is definitely a good element to include in a balanced diet, with many well known nutritional benefits, even the natural sugar of fructose can cause an acceleration in yeast growth.

In the early stages of diet adjustments that are intended to help ease the symptoms of Tinea Versicolor, it is recommended that people go through a trial and error period. By eliminating fruit altogether for a period of a month, a person will be able to gauge its effectiveness in easing the symptoms.

If symptoms improve, then you’ve got yourself another string to your bow. If symptoms don’t improve, you can go back to eating fruit and reaping the health benefits of a fruit-rich diet, safe in the knowledge that you’re not worsening the condition currently affecting your skin.

5. Nuts

All nuts, but especially peanuts, are well known for their capability to grow mold spores. Some of these mold spores can be highly toxic if allowed to develop unchecked and can encourage or facilitate yeast growth once inside the body. For this reason, the total elimination of nuts from the diet of someone living with Tinea Versicolor is recommended by many.

If however, you are a particular fan of nuts, as many people are, there are some nuts that may be tolerated a little more easily by someone living with this particular skin condition. Interestingly, hazelnuts or macadamia nuts are relatively safe to be eaten in small quantities and relatively infrequently. So nut lovers need not despair entirely, as there are some varieties of nuts that can still be enjoyed. As with fruit though, a trial and error period could be of value to someone making adjustments to their diet on health grounds.

6. Alcohol

You’d have to go a long way to find a more concentrated source of carbohydrates than those which are found in alcohol. Also extremely dense in terms of calories, alcohol is a tough one for many people to expel from their diet completely. Let’s face it, a lot of people like a drink. But when he drinks is causing the pigmentation of your skin to change, due to yeast content, leftover from the fermentation process, a person may want to think twice about pouring that cold one.

The yeasts used in the fermentation process of alcohol production can mean that yeasts are encouraged to grow in the gut, again impacting negatively on those living with Tinea Versicolor. Aside from the many other health benefits a person can expect to experience by giving the drink a break, it could prove key in naturally addressing a long-standing, yeast-based skin condition.

7. Alcohol in food

People with Tinea Versicolor may be reading this and wondering where in life they are supposed to find their source of joy if both their regular alcohol is taken away and then they have to wave goodbye to their secret alcohol fixes as well. Red wine in stews, liquors in chocolates, beer in the batter, they all have to go if a person wants to fairly test out the theory that abstaining from alcohol will improve their symptoms.

The best-case scenario is that it works completely, meaning that not only is the Tinea Versicolor lightened, but also a person’s liver reaps the rewards. No more hangovers either. The worst-case scenario would see the diet change being completely ineffective, and then the person would be able to go back to drinking alcohol. Come to think of it, it’s pretty hard to tell which of those is the best-case scenario and which is the worst.

8. Potato chips

Whilst not specifically boasting yeast as the main ingredient, the chemicals, and additives that combine to turn the humble potato into our favorite savory snack, are jam-packed full of yeast promoting enzymes. So unfortunately for people with Tinea Versicolor, potato chips may have to go too. There may be some variations which will do fine, and not have the same effects, but shopping around a little would be necessary.

It all comes down to a balancing act at the end of the day, as none of these dietary changes are likely to cure the condition fully, meaning that a person has to decide between a possible improvement in their conditions, or a life spent indulging in their favorite foodstuffs and all their yeast enhancing content. As stated previously, any changes to your diet, specifically those which aim to tackle a medical condition, should be done so under the supervision of a medical professional or a nutritional expert.
