Pretty much anyone can develop Jock Itch. Usually, people who tend to sweat a lot are most at risk of developing this nasty and annoying fungal infection, but it isn’t limited to the world of the Jock, as the name seems to suggest.

Those who exercise and train on a regular basis are likely to sweat more than your average person, however, they’re usually more likely to take a shower or a bath on the regular as well. Ironically, people who are about as far away from being a Jock as it’s possible to be, are some of the people who might be amongst those most likely to develop the condition.

Thinking of obese people and those who are pretty inactive, such as serial gamers or elderly people, fungal infections can take hold pretty easily in the hard to reach places and seldom seen crevices, cracks, and creases. Here are 8 things that can trigger the dreaded Jock Itch, for Jocks and anyone else.

1. Lots of sweating while playing sports

It may seem like a pretty obvious one to kick the list off with, but as the name ‘Jock Itch’ suggests, profuse sweating whilst playing sports can cause a break out of fungal infection. It isn’t necessarily the playing of the sport itself that causes the infection, but more specifically a person’s hygiene and self-care routines in the build-up and aftermath of participation in sports or other exertion.

Thorough cleansing of the sweat is necessary after exercise in order to prevent Jock Itch from being triggered. It won’t necessarily always happen, and some people may get lucky on the odd occasion that they skip a shower after shooting a few hoops, but sooner or later, as with Athlete’s foot, those little fungus spores will catch up with a person and cause them to regret not just taking the ten minutes out of their day to give themselves a scrub.

""

2. Hot and humid weather

The weather too can play a part in triggering Jock Itch for someone, as the hot and sticky conditions of a baking summer make everyone more prone to sweating like a pig. It’s unavoidable in the hottest of climates, and it really doesn’t matter whether you’re lying next to the pool, or partaking in some deep excavation of a sidewalk, you’re going to sweat in hot weather.

Of course, a person working in safety gear will sweat more than someone chilling by the pool, but the point is that in hot weather, everyone will sweat more than they usually would. It’s just tough. When the weather is particularly humid as well, this can be a contributory factor for triggering Jock Itch, as fungi thrive in hot, damp locations. Like it or not, your armpits, the backs of your knees, your groin and your tummy rolls all become hot, damp locations that would surely appear in a fungi holiday brochure.

""

3. Friction from wearing tight clothes

Tightly fitting clothes can trigger Jock Itch in record-breaking time. If you’re keeping everything in check with a tight-fitting bathing suit or with a pair of yoga pants, especially for longer periods of time, the excessive friction between skin and clothing can cause a fire to start on your skin. Not a fire in the literal sense, like that, would be far more alarming than a case of Jock Itch, but a fire in the sense of the absolute prime conditions for Jock Itch to take hold.

If wearing tight-fitting clothes is made necessary by the activity of your choosing, make sure you allow the body time to breathe later on, once it has been cleaned. You don’t need to be naked to do this, fortunately, as baggy or loose-fitting clothing will more than suffice. Sure, tight-fitting clothes can make you feel good and even help you perform better, but they’re pretty great for triggering Jock Itch too.

""

4. Sharing clothes or towels

As gross as it sounds, there are plenty of people who don’t give a second thought to sharing their clothes or their towels with their buddies. This might be indicative of a really close-knit friendship, it might be part and parcel of the whole ‘brother from another mother’ culture and even signal team strengthening camaraderie.

No one is denying any of that. What you have to weigh it up with though, is that all this sharing could potentially be a way to make sure you end up sharing more than you bargained for with a friend. You might not feel so close to each other if you’re both desperate to itch your private parts on account of the fact that you shared a towel in the locker room. Some things should be just for you, at the top of that list is your towel. A subsection of a towel should be any fungus living on that towel. Keep it to yourself.

""

5. Not drying the skin well

Drying the skin properly and thoroughly after sweating, bathing, or swimming is an absolute must. Failure to do so could easily trigger Jock Itch because, as mentioned in other points, the damp and the dark is where this fungus likes to dwell. By leaving parts of your body damp beneath your clothing, you’re making them susceptible to Jock Itch taking hold.

The easily dried places like the arms, the legs, and the torso are not likely to pick up an infection, but those hard to reach places between the legs and around the back are just as important to keep dry. You might look a little weird to those around you, but there’s nothing wrong with giving yourself a head to toe blasting of the hairdryer. You’ll definitely dry yourself off doing this. Just be careful where you aim the strength of the heat, you don’t want to cause any unnecessary burns to the precious parts of your body.

""

6. Health problems

For people who suffer from certain health problems, on top of the condition itself, there always seems to be some further type of health warnings that spring up from time to time. Unfortunately, Jock Itch is another one to an ever-growing list. It’s the nature of the beast. People who suffer from health conditions such as diabetes, obesity and immune system problems are more likely to develop Jock Itch than your average Joe.

So too are people who are relatively inactive due to conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, the simple reason being that their inactivity allows the infection-causing fungus to take hold a lot more readily than it would in someone whose skin is more on the go and regularly washed. Much like the dreaded bed sores for hospital patients and the elderly, inactivity can provide a breeding ground for Jock Itch. As much as possible, it’s recommended that anyone with an underlying condition tries to adhere to as many of the Jock Itch prevention methods that they can.

""

7. Athlete’s foot

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water, following the treatment and resolution of a nasty case of Athlete’s foot, bang, there it is. What looks like Athlete’s foot, but elsewhere on the body, Jock Itch can actually be triggered by the foot affecting fungal infection. Poor personal hygiene is usually the culprit here, as the fungus from Athlete’s foot finds a way to be transported to other areas of the body.

More accurately perhaps, a person struggling with the Athlete’s foot, unwittingly causes the fungus to move and take up residence in another dark and damp hidey-hole somewhere on the human body. The trick to avoiding triggering Jock Itch is to treat Athlete’s foot quickly and effectively, making sure that socks are one of the first things to go on, and that a separate towel is used to dry infected feet. Small and simple measures these may be, but effective measures they are as well.

""

8. Laziness

Like it or not, it’s true, simply being lazy can trigger an outbreak of Jock Itch infection. It comes down to being practically a bone idol in a number of scenarios. Reluctance to wash properly, if at all, following sports and exercise or after having become excessively sweaty. Failure to wash your clothes and do the laundry regularly is also another lazy way in which people trigger Jock Itch. Sometimes a blatant refusal to change one’s clothes, even the underwear can cause a triggering of Jock Itch to happen.

All of the above are blatant examples of sheer laziness, and Jock Itch loves laziness, as it gives it away in. Laziness is a welcome mat at the feet of fungal infections. This means couch potatoes; lounge lizards and addicted gamers are also likely to trigger an onset of Jock Itch, as their lifestyles are inherently lazy. Get up and move if you want to prevent it from triggering, just make sure you wash if you move enough to sweat though.

""

9. Weak Immune System

People that experience a dip in the health of their immune system are at risk of triggering the development of jock itch. We all have a bacterial and fungal balance in our skin that keeps our skin healthy and helps to prevent infection in cuts and scrapes.

The groin is an area with a particularly sensitive fungal balance, and changes in the immune system may spark an imbalance that leads to a breakout of jock itch in the affected individual.

This type of situation may occur due to a previous infection with another pathogen that diminishes the health of the immune system. Likewise, people living with diseases like HIV and AIDS, are prone to developing these fungal imbalances on the skin due to weak immune function.

It’s vital that you keep your immune system in the best health possible. Add fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, and kefir to your diet. These foods increase the levels of good bacteria in your digestive system, giving your immune system a boost.

""

10. Stress

Living a busy lifestyle takes a toll on our mental and physical health. Stress is a reality for anyone living in the digital age of social media and the internet. Working hard at your job and taking care of your family, while still managing to find the time to attend social functions can leave your feeling finished by the end of the week.

Our stress levels play a significant role in your health and well-being. When we are feeling stressed, we release the hormone cortisol. Cortisol is also known as the “fight-or-flight” hormone responsible for controlling our adrenal reaction.

As a result, people with high-stress levels feel burned out and fatigued, but cortisol keeps them awake. This hormonal imbalance involving cortisol can have severe repercussions on the state of your mental health.

The stress reaction may also cause the development of jock itch in some people. There is no treatment for this condition, and patients need to manage their symptoms using medications and lotion.

""

11. Medication

Some patients may experience an outbreak of jock itch after starting a course of medication. Many drugs affect the skin and cause numerous side-effects, including jock itch. If you have recently consumed any anti-malarial drugs on the way to a malaria hot spot, you may be at risk of developing jock itch.

Other drugs for treating blood pressure may also cause the occurrence of jock itch, and people using lithium to manage the effects of depression, are also at risk of developing outbreaks of jock itch. Many people may confuse the development of jock itch with an allergic reaction to their medication.

However, this is not the case, and the mechanism for the development of the rash typically involves changes in the balance of the bacteria and fungi on the skin, causing the growth and spread of the outbreak over the affected area. Consult with your doctor if you experience these symptoms, as they may be the sign of a more severe underlying health condition.

""

12. Wearing Wet Shorts

There is a reason why runners wear extra-short shorts when training on the road. Running with long shorts is a hassle when it starts to rain. As the shorts get wet, the material rubs between the skin on your legs, creating friction.

As a result, the runner may quickly start to develop the signs of a rash. Running with a rash can be an excruciatingly painful experience, especially later on in the day, when you have to go to work after training.

When you’re walking around a job site, with your jeans chaffing against a runner’s rash, you can expect it to increase these symptoms of irritation.

As a result, the runner may develop a condition known as, “contact dermatitis,” where the affected individual experiences the rapid spread of the rash all over the groin resulting in jock itch. Likewise, surfers who spend too much time in the water in boardshorts may develop this sort of chaffing which can lead to jock itch as well.

""

13. Sitting for Extended Periods

People who spend significant amounts of time sitting, and who are also overweight or obese, may risk triggering jock itch. The fungi on our skin responsible for the development of the condition thrive in the folds between the belly and the groin.

As a result, the person may develop a jock itch rash on their belt line that causes persistent 9irritation. The patient may find that their symptoms increase when they wear a belt, and as a result, they may refrain from wearing belts altogether.

On occasion, the fungi outbreak may spread down toward the groin area from the beltline, resulting in the development of jock itch symptoms in the patient. If you are overweight and suffer from frequent outbreaks of jock itch, it’s vital that you keep the area as dry as possible at all times.

Use talcum powder to absorb excess sweat, and keep some fungicidal cream on hand to resolve any aggressive outbreaks.

""

14. The Difference Between Inverse Psoriasis and Jock Itch

Many people may confuse jock itch with reverse psoriasis, an autoimmune skin disorder. RP occurs when the immune system identifies healthy skin cells as invaders. As a result, it signals the immune system to produce antibodies to attack the healthy cells, resulting in the development of psoriasis plaques.

In typical cases of psoriasis, the patient experiences raised lesions on their skin in various locations over the body. These lesions do not respond to any known medications of lotions, and they may take months to subside. Medical science is still unclear as to the mechanism that causes these lesions, and there is no known cure. Paragraph

Inverse psoriasis is a form of the disorder that affects the folds in the skin, such as in the above example and the folds of the elbows, knees, and groin. The lesions may look and feel a lot like jock itch rash, but they persist for far longer and do not always have an intense itching sensation.
