You may be wondering why on earth you would want to make yourself a cup of burdock root tea when there are plenty of other varieties of hot beverage that are widely available and more easily accessible. Well, if you are asking yourself that perhaps you should ask yourself a few more.

Does your regular coffee, tea or hot chocolate have a great many health benefits? Sure, they might taste great and give you that caffeinated kick in the morning, but the benefits of burdock root tea are many and varied.

Just a few examples of its potential application include the treatment of arthritis, the common cold, measles, and tonsillitis. Can your cup of coffee do that? No, I didn’t think so. Now that you’re at least a little bit interested, you may want to think about actually giving this burdock root tea a shot. It can’t hurt to try something new, and who knows, it may even become your hot drink of choice. Here’s how to prepare it.

1. Select Fresh Burdock Root

If there’s any chance at all of you actually liking the drink that you’re about to make, having the absolute finest of ingredients is surely the right way to get started. Choosing the freshest burdock root can be tricky for the untrained eye and for someone who is more accustomed to having someone else make their hot drinks for them, but everyone has to learn sometime.

In order to select the freshest burdock root to make your tea with, you need to find a piece of the foot that is really quite firm, as any kind of softness is a telltale sign that you’re not dealing with fresh burdock root.

The color of the burdock root is nowhere near as useful as an indicator to the freshness, as some roots can be very dark in color, whilst others may be a little paler, similar to parchment paper. The firm is what we’re looking for here.

2. Clean Burdock Root

When it comes to cleaning the burdock root, there are a few steps that must be followed to ensure that now you’ve managed to choose some fresh burdock root, you’re giving it the respect it deserves by preparing it properly.

Firstly, you need to scrape the burdock root with the rough edge of a knife, this is particularly important for the freshest ingredients, as they can be almost as firm as a sweet potato. Secondly, it is important to continue the cleaning process by using a damp cloth and cold water, to remove any dirt or bacteria which may have accumulated on the burdock root. When cooking with fresh fruit and vegetables, one of the main tasks that anyone should perform is the washing of the ingredients, and so this step shouldn’t seem like too much of a chore. It isn’t as quick as your usual hot drink preparation, but we’ve moved past that now.

If you’re still having difficulty making the transition from convenience to this longer form of preparation, get yourself a cup of your other favorite hot drink to see you through the next couple of steps in the preparation process.

3. Chop Burdock Root

When it comes to chopping the root, bearing in mind that you should be dealing with a very fresh and suitably firm ingredient, the selection of the correct knife is very important.

A poor workman always blames their tools it is said, and if you want to make yourself the perfect burdock root tea, you don’t want to leave any room for error or give yourself any excuses whatsoever. The sharpest knife in the drawer should do the trick, assuming you haven’t got a samurai sword to hand.

The burdock root needs to be chopped very coarsely until you are left with about 2 to 3 tablespoons of chopped burdock root. Obviously, the amount of burdock root that you chop will be determined by the amount of tea that you’re planning on making. If you’ve got people waiting for their drink though, they’ve probably headed out to get a cup of coffee by this point.

4. Place Into Pot

It sounds simple, but sometimes the easy things are where people slip up. All you have to do for this step is to place the ingredient into a pot, that’s literally it. The only potential difficulty with this is in choosing the correct pot for your needs. But don’t worry about that, we’ve got you covered.

A stainless steel pot, preferably with a well-fitting glass lid is what you need. As for the actual placing of the ingredient into the plan, you shouldn’t need too much of a step by step guide as to how to do that, but if you do, here goes. Simply use your hand or hands to scoop up the coarsely chopped burdock root and move your hand until it is hovering over the pot.

When you are satisfied that your hand is in the right position to make the drop, open those fingers up like a grabber machine in reverse and watch as the beautiful chopped burdock root drops into your pan, ready for the next step.

5. Bring to Boil

Assuming you have already added the water, which may be a mistake, the next thing you need to do is boil this bad boy up. Okay, let’s jump back a step just in case you missed it.

Before bringing the water to the boil you need to know how much water to add. 3 cups of filtered or natural spring water need to be added to the burdock root, or more if more is needed to cover the ingredients completely. When the water has been added, the pan needs to be moved over a heat source and allowed to heat up until it reaches the boiling point.

Without getting too technical for you, the boiling point is when the bubbles all start to appear and the water becomes more of a hazard for anyone who might not be that much of a professional in the kitchen. In other words, you better watch out.

6. Simmer

Having allowed the brew to come to the boil, the next step requires patience, as although you may be desperate to give your burdock root tea a tasting, it isn’t quite ready yet. The patience of the tea maker will be really tested at this point, as the recommendation is to allow 30 minutes for the tea to simmer.

What could you do in 30 minutes whilst waiting for your tea to brew? Whilst you think of some pre-watershed answers to that last question, let’s explore the reasons for this simmering stage. Simmering allows the burdock roots flavors and health benefits to be fully absorbed and dissolved into the water. Removing the burdock root from the water immediately after boiling would have a similar effect as removing a teabag straight after adding boiling water.

If you want a flavorless hot drink with little to no health benefits though, go right ahead and skip the simmering part.

""

7. Find Your Favorite Mug

This step is far more important than any of the other steps combined. Choosing your favorite mug is an essential part of the process of learning to enjoy a brand new hot drink.

Even if your mug of choice is lurking in the depths of an overflowing sink, it’s well worth your time digging it out and giving it a good clean. There is actually science behind this step too, believe it or not, as a study of people who were traditionally fussy eaters found that in most cases, people were more likely to sample and even enjoy a new drink or food type if it was presented in a way that they found familiar.

An example of this would be for someone trying veganism, they are much more likely to enjoy and eat tofu if it is presented to look like scrambled eggs for instance. The same is true for enjoying a new hot drink, if it looks familiar, there’s more chance that you’ll actually like it!

""

8. Serve Hot

Another step that should really go without saying, but why change the habit of a lifetime when we’ve come so far together on this journey already. Now that the time has come to try your delicious, nutritious and hugely beneficial brew of burdock root tea, please ensure that you don’t fall at the final hurdle.

Serving the drink hot is an absolute necessity. This isn’t up for negotiation at all. When you first tried tea, or coffee or hot chocolate, part of the reason that you fell in love with that particular beverage will be due in no small part to the fact that it warmed you from the inside out. The warmth of a hot drink is what makes them so appealing and so comforting.

For this reason, before you’re about to sample or serve your very first cup of burdock root tea, remember to make sure it’s as hot as you’d like a cup of any other hot drink to be.
