There are millions of people all over the world who are legally blind or sight-impaired, and while many of them were born with health conditions that impaired their sight from an early age, there are many reported cases of blindness out there which only came on later in life – and might have been prevented with the right care or treatment at the right time.

There are many conditions that can cause you to go blind or lose partial vision: Astigmatism, glaucoma, cataracts and serious general eye infections are some of the potential causes, other times direct eye injury can be the cause of blindness for life.

If you are in the process of gradually losing sight, there are many times still things you can do to reduce your chances of going blind.

Here are 8 general tips you can use to help reduce any chances of blindness during your lifetime.

1. Regular Eye Examinations

Regular eye examinations could be one of the single most important keys to avoiding the health conditions that can cause blindness (and blindness or impaired sight later on in life). If you want to make sure your eyes and vision are in the condition they should be, the only real way is to have it tested by an expert – and if you have any issues with your vision that could pose a risk to your sight, this is where they’ll see it.

The majority of health conditions behind blindness are ones that are best spotted early on, and most of them can still be treated when they’re in the early stages. This should illustrate just why regular eye examinations – at least once to twice per year – are extremely important to keep your vision perfect throughout your life.

Remember to mention symptoms that you are experiencing (if any) during your appointment.

2. The Right Sunglasses

The eyes take far more of a beating during one lifetime than you might have imagined, and a lot of it has to do with the amount of sunlight and UV rays that your eyes get exposed to during your life. A lifetime spent in harsh conditions exposed to the sun can make you blind; the same way, exposing yourself to too much of the opposite for long periods of time without the right type of eye-wear can cause an eye condition that’s called snow-blindness in some conditions and climates.

You don’t have to look directly into the sun to have it affect your vision. If you spend a lot of time in the sun, always make sure that your eyes are well-protected. Wear the right sunglasses – and no fakes! – that can help to protect your eyes against the sun’s rays, and it could be enough to save your vision.

3. Taking Care with Contacts

Contact lenses are often prescribed for many conditions that affect the eyesight: It proves to be a popular choice for anyone who doesn’t want glasses getting in the way, or for people who feel that their vision issues aren’t “bad enough” to warrant having to wear glasses – many people even wear contact lenses for aesthetic reasons only, including for cosplay events or exclusively for filming.

While contact lenses are generally considered safe, they can come with associated health risks that you should know about. Contact lenses that aren’t cleaned properly can lead straight to eye infection – and untreated, this, in turn, can lead to blindness. Improper handling of contact lenses can also see them get “stuck” in the eye, which might require surgery and lead to slight vision loss.

Contact lenses also aren’t suited for all types of eye conditions and might cause more vision damage for some.

4. Treating Eye Infections ASAP

Eye infections are a surprisingly common health condition, and most people will develop at least a minor eye infection at least once during their lives. With the majority of people out there, the eye infection might go away by itself (or have been caused by allergies), or they might jump to act fast enough with the right antibiotics that mean the infection clears up fast enough – but there is a worst-case scenario for an eye infection.

Sometimes eye infections can be very serious and fast-acting; It’s vital to get any type of eye infection treated as soon as you’ve noticed issues with your vision. Delaying treatment of eye infection for longer than you should mean that you end up causing permanent damage to the eye with just a day’s worth of delay.

Vision loss and blindness can both very commonly be associated with an untreated eye infection.

5. Avoiding Eye Strain

Eye strain is such a common health condition that most people just happen to consider it part of daily life without sparing it a second thought – and without realizing how serious it could be for their health. Straining the eyes happens to everyone at some point when they’re tired or it feels like their eyes have been focusing on the same thing for too long, and it’s very commonly seen in careers that spend a lot of time reading or looking at things close up. It’s also often seen in careers that involve sitting in front of a screen for hours at a time.

Straining the eyes even past the point where they already start to show the signs of being strained is never a good idea, and it can make many of the conditions that eventually cause blindness worse. Never strain your eyes: Get them checked out if you notice any vision loss, and be sure to give your eyes the necessary rest when your eyes tell you they need it.

6. Avoiding Direct Eye Injury

Direct injury to the eye makes for one of the most common causes of blindness in the world: There are many people out there who didn’t start out life blind, but who became vision-impaired or blind due to an eye injury much later on in life. Many of these eye injuries happened as simple mistakes, and it’s true that many of these accidents could have been prevented with just some thought before they took place.

There are plenty of ways to injure the eyes which could impair your sight, and a lot of them aren’t always obvious. Direct exposure to sunlight for too long can do a large amount of damage to your eyes – and the same is true for wood or metal splinters if you work in an industry where you are exposed to it.

Always take care in situations where your eyes might be at risk: It can help you to avoid blindness.

7. A Healthier Diet

Everyone knows that you should ideally follow a healthy diet, but a lot of people don’t stop to spare a thought for just what a healthy diet might be – or what they can do to get there. Everyone’s idea of a healthy diet is different, and it’s usually best for you to visit a nutrition expert who can put together a custom diet for your individual needs, height, weight, and requirements. If you’ve wondered why diet plants never work, it’s usually because they don’t cater to you.

A healthier diet starts off with more natural forms of food; cut out preservatives, additives, and artificial ingredients first. These can wreck your health in the long-term, and they are often associated with a long list of health complications that can include repeated kidney infections, incorrectly absorbing nutrients, changing your taste buds and even affecting your eyesight.

A healthy diet is the first step to a healthier overall life.

8. Doctor’s Appointments

If you want to keep your eye health in good condition and avoid the conditions that could be the cause of sight impairment or blindness later on in life, one of the first things you should do is to make regular appointments with your ophthalmologist – at least twice per year, even if you don’t have any existing eye health conditions that you know of, and a little more regularly if you do.

Many conditions that can potentially cause blindness can be stopped with a simple appointment to a doctor. Remember that this isn’t just restricted to ophthalmologists, but you should also make an appointment with a range of other doctors to cover the rest of your health.

There are many conditions that aren’t related to your eyes which can also put you at an increased risk for blindness, and regular doctor’s appointments are the only way to get this looked at before it becomes a problem for your health.
