Groin pain is a common problem for many men, and there are many things that can cause it. Regardless of how common it is, it can still be seriously painful and even debilitating for some men.

Groin pain can sometimes be caused by a minor issue such as a pulled muscle. If this is the case, the pain usually subsides within a day or two, as long as the muscle has time to rest and heal. In other cases, a more severe underlying cause may be to blame. It is important to find the underlying cause of groin pain so that appropriate treatment can be found.

Infections and injuries are common causes, but there can be other things to blame as well. If you are experiencing groin pain that lasts for more than a couple days or becomes so severe that you are unable to stand it, seek medical treatment immediately.

Here are eight of the most common causes of groin pain in men.

1. Inguinal Hernia

This type of hernia occurs when a piece of fat or intestine pushed through a weak area of muscle in the abdomen. Many men feel groin pain as a result of a hernia, and some may experience a bulge or swollen scrotum with the pain.

This is a common problem, and 25% of all men will have an inguinal hernia at least once in their life. Some men are more prone to them than others, and older men are more likely to suffer from this condition than younger men. In some cases, the piece of intestine or fat may cut off the blood supply to the intestine, which can result in a strangulated hernia.

These can be more painful and cause other complications. This can be a life-threatening emergency and requires immediate medical care. Surgery is needed to correct the hernia and can also help prevent future hernias.

Once the patient recovers from surgery, the groin pain should go away as well.

""

2. Prostatitis

Prostatitis occurs when there is swelling or pain in the prostate that is commonly caused by an infection. In addition to feeling pain in the groin, people who suffer from prostatitis may also have difficulty urinating.

Most people report severe groin pain when urinating and seek medical care because of this symptom. The infection must be treated with an antibiotic, and once the medicine starts working the groin pain usually subsides fairly quickly.

Prostatitis can go away on its own in some situations, but it may take some time, and the pain may become unbearable at times. If you are suffering from difficulty urinating and groin pain, there’s a good chance that prostatitis is to blame. Talk to your doctor to determine if the swelling is caused by an infection and requires antibiotics.

Pain medications may also be prescribed if necessary and can help to make things easier until the swelling and under symptoms go away.

""

3. Epididymitis

Epididymitis occurs when the tube that stores sperm becomes swollen or inflamed. It is usually caused by an infection and requires antibiotics for treatment.

In addition to groin pain, people who suffer from epididymitis may also experience pain and swelling on one side of the scrotum or in both testicles. Other symptoms include pain while urinating, fever, and a milky discharge from the penis.

Many people experience severe pain in the groin as a result of the infection. The antibiotics normally take a day or two to start working, but once they are in the system, the groin pain usually goes away pretty quickly.

This is one of the most common causes of groin pain and is easy to treat if left the infection can spread to other areas of the body, and the pain may become more severe. Doctors can also prescribe pain medication to help ease the pain until the antibiotics start working.

""

4. Orchitis

Orchitis is swelling in one or both testicles. There are many things that can cause it, and the swelling can press against nerves and tissues in the groin, and cause severe pain. The swelling is usually caused by an infection, but injuries can also cause it.

The mumps virus can also cause orchitis, and it is not uncommon for this condition to accompany other problems with the testicles. The underlying cause of the orchitis needs to be treated in order to reduce the swelling and stop the groin pain. Antibiotics are used to treat orchitis caused by infections, and surgery may be necessary to treat injuries.

The groin pain should subside within a few days of treatment or recovery. If the orchitis is not treated properly and persists for a long time, it can lead to fertility issues. If you notice groin pain and swelling, it’s important to seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

""

5. Testicular Torsion

This condition happens if your testicle gets twisted inside the scrotum. It’s a very painful condition, and many men compare the pain to being kicked hard between the legs. This is considered a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment to avoid complications.

The twist in the testicles can reduce the blood flow to the testicle and eventually cause it to do. If the condition is not treated within a couple of hours, the testicle may not be able to be saved. The pain is usually a result of the twisted testicle pulling against the groin.

While testicular torsion can happen to men of all ages, it is more common in teenagers, especially those that play sports. Surgery is often needed to correct this problem, and the group area may be sore for several days after the treatment. Once the testicle heals, the groin pain should subside relatively quickly.

""

6. Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer usually presents itself as a hard lump in the testicles. It can, however, also cause pain in the groin. In fact, sometimes, the first symptoms of testicular cancer are groin pain.

The lump can press against nerves in the groin, which can cause the pain. Some people also experience hard lumps in the groin near the testicles. The good news is, testicular cancer is not a very common cancer, and it can be treated. As long as it is caught early, it can be treated without any problems.

If you experience any problems with your testicles or have been experiencing groin pain with no obvious reason, be sure to talk to a doctor. There are other symptoms of testicular cancer, so don’t assume that groin pain is a sign of cancer. There are many other things it could be too, that are less serious and easier to treat.

""

7. Hip Problems

If you are suffering from hip pain caused by arthritis or bursitis, it may move to your groin. The hips and groin at connected so it’s not uncommon for a problem in one of these areas to radiate to the other.

Groin pain caused by hip problems can come on overtime but can be severe. It is often aggravated by sitting for a long period of time or getting up from a low seat. Medications and rest can help relieve the pain in the groin, but if the underlying cause is not dealt with, you may experience groin pain until the problem is fixed.

Physical therapy is another option for hip and groin pain. Some people don’t have any hip pain, but only groin pain caused by a problem in the hips. This can make it difficult to treat the pain. A doctor can diagnose the cause of the pain and choose an appropriate treatment.

""

8. Kidney Infection

Kidney infections are common infections that most people will experience at least once in their lives. Kidney infections occur when a urinary tract infection or bladder infection moves into the kidneys.

The infection can cause pain in many areas of the body, including the hips, stomach, back, and groin. The infection causes inflammation and swelling, which can put pressure on nerves and lead to pain. Kidney infections can be very painful, and if they aren’t treated, they can lead to other complications.

Groin pain is usually one of the first symptoms of a kidney infection. If you suspect you may have a kidney infection, you should see a doctor as you will likely need a prescription for antibiotics to help clear it up.

Once the antibiotics start to work and the infection clears up, the groin pain should go away too. In some cases, the pain may linger on for a couple of days.

""

9. Enlarged Lymph Nodes

When we experience a bacterial infection, the lymphatic system goes into overdrive to clear the pathogen from the body. The lymph nodes act as filters, trapping pathogens. As a result of this action, the nodes begin to swell, causing symptoms of discomfort.

The neck, underarms, and groin are areas of the body that house the most amount of lymph nodes. It’s for this reason that your doctor checks your throat when you’re sick. Signs of swelling in the lymph nodes are a clear indicator of infection.

When the lymph nodes in the groin start to swell, they may cause symptoms of pain and discomfort, especially when rising from a chair or getting out of bed. The affected individual may also experience pain or discomfort when walking.

In most cases, the lymph nodes decline in size as the infection passes, with no lasting damage to the affected area. If the lymph nodes turn firm, then you should seek medical assistance immediately, as this could be a sign of a life-threatening situation.

""

10. Femoral Hernia

The abdominal muscles act as a containment barrier to house the internal organs. Most people will go through life without experiencing any problems with their abdominal muscles. However, when a person strains during movement, such as when leaning over or exercising, they may experience a tear in the abdominal wall, resulting in the onset of a femoral hernia.

The tissues may push through this tear in the lower abdominal wall, known as the formal canal. This hernia results in symptoms of severe pain in the groin, requiring the use of pain killers and anti-inflammatories to curb the effects of the hernia.

A femoral hernia appears as a bump under the skin around the groin. The affected individual may experience pain when touching the hernia, and they require surgery to repair the hernia and return the integrity to the lower abdominal wall.

The condition is more common in women than in men, and in some cases, the hernia may stop blood flow from the femoral artery to the intestines, resulting in a life-threatening situation.

""

11. Osteitis Pubis

There are a variety of adverse health conditions that affect the groin, producing pain symptoms. Osteitis pubis describes a situation where the pubic symphysis, the joint found between the right and left pubic bone, experiences non-infectious inflammation. The pubic symphysis sits in front of the bladder, above the genitalia.

Patients who experience the onset of osteitis pubis find theta they develop severe pain in the groin. The only way to reduce the inflammation is through rest and the use of OTC painkillers and anti-inflammatories. If the patient refuses to rest, they may notice that their symptoms of pain increase when attempting to walk or climb stairs. Coughing and sneezing may also cause the development of sharp pains in the groin as well.

The patient may also experience changes in their walking gait, as the body tries to accommodate the effects of the condition. As a result of these changes, the patient may develop a waddle.

""

12. Ovarian Cysts

Some women may find that they develop cysts in their ovaries. Typically, ovarian cysts are not life-threatening, and the body will pass them over time. However, in some cases, the cysts may grow to a large size, presenting symptoms of pain in the groin. The pain symptoms feel like they emanate from the crotch to the sides of the pelvis and the lower ribs.

These pain symptoms are relatively mild, but if the cysts burst, then the affected individual may experience sharp, severe pain. Burst cysts may present a life-threatening situation, and the affected individual requires surgery to remove them before they lead to conditions like sepsis, where the toxins infect the bloodstream.

The cysts also cause symptoms of swelling and inflammation in the groin, and the patient may confuse these symptoms for menstrual pain. If diagnosed in time, removing the cysts should not present any complications, and in most cases, the patient makes a full recovery.

""

13. Pinched Nerve

Some people may experience pain in the groin due to a pinched nerve. This condition is relatively common and affects both men and women. There are a variety of reasons why a person may experience the onset of a pinched nerve. Athletes and sportspeople may trap a nerve during overextending their body during training or competition, resulting in symptoms of pain.

People who spend the majority of their day in a seated position behind their desks may also experience the effects of trapped nerves, due to the atrophy of supporting muscles in the hips. When forces apply pressure to the tissues around nerves, such as ligaments and muscles, it results in a trapped nerve, followed by symptoms of pain during movement. Pinching a nerve in the hip may cause symptoms of groin pain that increase when walking or rising from a seated position. In most cases, rest and ice will help to reduce the inflammation in the affected area, minimizing pain symptoms.

14. Urinary Tract Infection

A urinary tract infection can occur due to contracting a bacterial or viral infection. Most cases of UTI cause groin pain, along with further pain symptoms when urinating. Viral infections are the most common cause of urinary tract infection, and they tend to resolve by themselves in a few days, without the need for antibiotics.

However, bacterial UTI is a different case altogether. Bacteria that enter the urethra may travel up toward the bladder, causing symptoms of intense pain. The bacteria won’t go away by itself, as is the case with viral infections. Instead, the patient requires treatment with antibiotics to remove the pathogen and restore the urinary tract to health.

In the majority of cases, urinary tract infections are a treatable condition that rarely presents any dangerous complications with your health. However, for some women, if left undiagnosed and untreated, a bacterial infection may progress to PID – Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.

""

15. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Women that experience bacterial urinary tract infections, and don’t seek treatment, may end up developing symptoms of PID. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is a life-threatening condition that causes extreme discomfort and pain in the pelvis. PID typically occurs due to infection with a bacterial STI, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea.

As the bacteria migrate from the urethra to the bladder, the patient may experience severe pain. However, if the bacteria move up toward the fallopian tubes and ovaries, it can result in the onset of severe inflammatory symptoms that may cause intense pain.

In most cases, doctors can reverse the condition through the use of penicillin or antibiotics that kill off the invading bacteria. However, some bacteria may be resistant to medications, leading to a life-threatening situation that may result in the death of the patient.

If you notice any symptoms of pain in the days after having unprotected sex with a partner, you may be experiencing the onset of PID. It’s best if you visit your physician for a checkup and blood test to search for the presence of bacterial infection.

""

16. Pregnancy

When women fall pregnant, they experience a variety of symptoms linked to their condition. As the uterus expands to accommodate the fetus, the expectant mother may start to notice signs of groin pain. This pain occurs due to the uterus placing pressure on the organs in the groin, causing sensations of cramping or mild discomfort.

Most women report symptoms of groin pain in the later stages of pregnancy. This pain occurs due to the head of the baby pressing onto the pelvis, causing sensations of intermittent or constant pain in the mother. In some cases, the varicocele ligament – a round ligament connecting the groin to the uterus, may experience strain, resulting in groin pain.

Unfortunately, in the later stages of pregnancy, doctors recommend that pregnant women avoid the use of painkillers or anti-inflammatories as much as possible to avoid affecting the unborn child. As a result, some expectant mothers may have to learn to live with pain symptoms.

""

17. Bursitis

The bursa is a fluid-filled sac that cushions the joints. Bursa resides in almost every joint in the body, including the hips. When the bursa inflames, it leads to an inflammatory condition known as “bursitis.” People who experience the onset of bursitis may find that they start to experience sensations of pain and discomfort in the groin.

Bursitis typically occurs due to an impact on the joint, or due to inflammatory conditions like arthritis. The symptoms of pain are mild and irritating, causing a loss of full mobility in the affected joint. Doctors treat bursitis using painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications to relieve the symptoms.

However, the most effective treatment for bursitis is rest. You can ice the affected hip to help accelerate the healing process, and limit movement of the affected joint as much as possible. Bursitis may hang around for a few weeks, and if you strain your hips during this time, it will exacerbate your pain symptoms and delay healing.

""

18. Muscle Sprain

Athletes and sportspeople are at risk of injury whenever they step into the gym or onto the sports field. To prevent damage, most athletes warm-up before exerting themselves physically. Warming up helps to loosen the joints and muscular system while enhancing blood flow.

However, there are occasions where the athlete may fail to warm up correctly. As a result, they run the risk of sustaining an injury or a muscle strain. In the worst cases, the athlete may tear a ligament or muscle, resulting in a nasty injury that takes months to heal – all because they failed to warm up correctly before engaging in an activity.

Tearing a groin muscle is an incredibly painful experience. This tear or sprain is a reasonably common injury for athletes to incur. A torn groin may result in months of rest to heal properly. After sustaining the injury, the affected individual requires the use of painkillers and anti-inflammatories to manage the symptoms of pain and swelling.

""

19. Superficial Skin Infection

A superficial skin infection presents as redness or swelling of the skin that covers a small area of the skin. In most cases, the SSI looks like a pimple, showing up as a tiny, bright-red head. The infected individual will notice heat emanating from the infected area of the skin, and it may be tender to touch.

In some cases, the infection may go away on its own. However, in the case of a bacterial infection, the affected individual may require the use of topical antibiotic cream to kill off the invading bacteria. If left undiagnosed and unmanaged, the skin infection may result in a drop in the immune response, resulting in complications where the patient may develop a severe skin infection, such as Staph.

Patients may find that the symptoms of pain exacerbate when they move their hips to get out of bed or rise from a seating position. Chaffing may also cause a worsening in pain symptoms as well.

""

20. STI

Statistics show that 50-percent of Americans will contract some form of a sexually transmitted disease by the time they turn 25-years old. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are among the top two sexually transmitted infections incurred by Americans, and they are both bacterial.

In many cases, the disease presents no symptoms, and the patient becomes a carrier, spreading the STI to other people through unprotected sex with multiple partners. It’s for this reason that rates of STD infection are soaring among the United States population.

For those patients that do experience symptoms, they start as burning when urinating, and progress into more complex and severe symptoms. Women who experience the onset of a bacterial STI may find that they begin to experience pain in the groin. This symptom may occur due to the bacteria migrating up the urethra, causing inflammation in the uterus and bladder.

Doctors treat STI infection with antibiotics, and in most cases, the patient will make a full recovery.
