""

We have all had a case of the upset tummy, as it is a common condition. So, since it is likely to happen again, let us review some low cost, relatively easy home remedies for such occasion.

These remedies are homeopathic in nature – meaning that they take a holistic approach (i.e. broad perspective, taking into account all parts as they relate to the whole, in this case – a person, including all biopsychosocial parts) and they come with natural treatment (such as harnessing the strengths and healing elements of plants, temperature, meditation, and other non-chemical or man-made based solutions).

This is also often called alternative medicine and is often representative of many medicinal approaches of the past, especially Native American, Asian, and Indian in origin.

For non-lethal situations, a homeopathic approach is often ideal, as your body will not become resistant to antibiotics and such, and there tend to be far fewer side effects.

1. Avoid Difficult to Digest Foods

Fatty, fried… rich, creamy… heavily preserved, and salty… These are all foods that upset the stomach. They are difficult to digest and put extra wear and energy expenditure there.

Instead of ordering the Double Smoked Bacon with Cheese breakfast sandwich… try going for the oatmeal with fruit. A BRAT diet is recommended in lieu of a common American diet of grease, fat, and over-saltiness…

This constitutes B- bananas, R- rice, A- applesauce, and T- toast. These foods are gentle on the stomach, thereby reducing pain (depending on the source), and are starchy, so they make for firmer stool (bowel movements, doo-doo), which is helpful in cases of diarrhea.

Your pallet (taste buds) will adjust to this more mild-flavored diet and you will begin to enjoy it. Of course, you will likely enjoy the benefits of a settled, calm, and content tummy even more.

""

2. Ginger

Ginger has been thought of as a homeopathic and flavorful food for a very long time, many centuries. It is abundant in the Asian diet (no surprise seeing as they have many recorded homeopathic treatments).

Ginger contains chemicals called gingerols and schools, which increase the speed of contractions in the stomach… which is helpful if you are needing to move upsetting contents through quickly. This root, on top of tasting awesome, reduces diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

In order to get enough throughout your day, you might try adding some to your water (cold or hot) beverage.

You can try natural high ginger containing ginger ale (Whole Foods or Central Market and a few other chain health grocery stores should have this). You can also eat sushi, as it is served typically with rice and ginger. It tastes great, in my opinion.

""

3. Mint

Mint is one of those overall helpful herbs worth ingesting. On top of the fresh breath you get from this medicinal herb you can grow at home… the menthol contained within it can help reduce diarrhea, vomiting, and muscle spasms of the intestines and it helps relieve pain.

Mint has been found to be a common treatment of gas, indigestion, and diarrhea in areas of the Middle East (Pakistan, India, and Iran). Paired with cardamom, this herb makes a lovely cup of tea. You can even pour it over ice and add a little honey to jazz it up and make it more enjoyable for you if you prefer.

If you are stuck in the office most of the day, sucking on candied mint should help soothe stomach discomfort. Make sure that if your pain is severe, that you get yourself into a doctor to have a look… more testing on the front end is ideal.

""

4. Drink Water

Water is essential to basically every function of the body. We lose water every day, so it is imperative to gain new freshwater daily. The body can withstand about 10 days, it is said, without water.

Doctors recommend 2.7 liters per day for women and 3.7 per day for men. A small percentage of this will come from your food, but about eight cups per day (about two liters) is recommended for basically all adults. This is easy if you are flavoring your water with some good for your tummy herbs, such as ginger, mint, cinnamon, clove, basil, turmeric, and lemon. This goal of consumption of water is made easier if you can carry a water bottle with you.

It may be ideal for you to put a couple of inches of water in a plastic or metal water bottle in the freezer overnight, so it keeps cool longer in the day.

""

5. Warm Bath

On top of the psychological effects of relaxation, ease, and comfort that come from taking a warm bath, which is then, of course, passed on to your physiology promoting relaxation, a de-stressed state, and encouraging physical health… the direct physical benefits of taking a warm bath are:

1) muscle relaxation from the temperature, and 2) ease of indigestion. Alternatively, a heating pad may be applied, or even laying out in the sun for about fifteen minutes, with sunscreen on, of course.

Epsom salts may be added to warm bath water to even more increase the benefits of muscle relaxation here… further promoting relaxed stomach wall lining and ease. Playing soothing music may further promote relaxation and health.

Meditation practices such as Yoga Nidra or simple breathing techniques may be applied, too. As simple as counting your in-breath, and matching your out-breath to it with slow mindfulness can help.

""

6. Aloe Juice

Aloe Vera juice is commonly consumed by Asian populations. It can be found in health food stores, Asian supermarkets, and a few other places, as well as online. It is said to reduce stomach acid to a healthy amount, encourage bowel movements, remove toxins, reduce inflammation, improve protein digestion, and encourage healthy gut flora. That is a long list of good if you asked me.

Even in subtle amounts, when this is consumed a few times a week (maybe daily if there is a current state of pain) over time, a lot of long-term health is sure to prevail.

One study conducted, showed when small quantities of this were consumed daily for a month, gastrointestinal reflux disease symptoms were relieved (i.e. heartburn, nausea, acid reflux, vomiting, burping, and gas).

Personally, I think it tastes great and would darn near drink it regardless, but the health benefits turn it into an ideal diet staple.

""

7. Avoid Alcohol & Smoking

Drinking alcohol has a long list of adverse side-effects that no one really wants. I personally do not see much pay off to the consumption of alcohol. But, especially in regards to stomach pain, this should be avoided entirely.

Alcohol is a toxin (which is why we feel funny and act differently when we drink it). It irritates the walls of the stomach.

A healthy person may be able to consume alcohol from time to time in moderate to mild portions and still be fine with few adverse health reactions, but if we are at all under the weather, alcohol can really, truly take its toll.

Smoking is similar in that it makes us feel funny a little bit due to the chemicals throwing our system for a loop a little bit.

The cancer-causing attributes of the burning materials irritate the throat and any tender tissues, increasing possible health complications.

""

8. Yarrow

Achillea Millefolium, also known simply as yarrow, is a flower that blooms across North America, Asia, and Europe. Its medicinal “superpowers” or naturally occurring helpful elements are flavonoids, lactones, resins, polyphenols, and tannins. These are said to reduce stomach acid to a normal, healthy level.

This flower acts upon the vagus nerve (the main nerve involved indigestion). This can help with stomach pain (depending on the source, again). This flower (in the dried or fresh state) can be added to salads, tea, or just about anything, really.

The flower is white with tiny petals and has clusters on its stems, staying fairly low to the ground, but reaching about three feet high often. It can also be acquired in pill form, as an herbal supplement.

This is a good way to know how much you are ingesting and to ensure you ingest it, on a busy day.

""

9. Apple Cider Vinegar

When your stomach is cramping, mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 6-oz of water, and drink it down. ACV contains beneficial probiotic bacteria that help to reduce inflammation in the gut. Pick up a bottle of unfiltered, organic apple cider vinegar, and you’ll notice a brown suspension in the liquid.

This suspended material is known as “the mother,” a probiotic bacterium that reduces inflammation of the intestinal wall while soothing the effects of a sore stomach. Make sure that you only purchase raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar. The filtering process removes the mother, rendering the ACV no more beneficial than regular spirit vinegar.

Repeat your ACV treatment two to three times a day to experience relief from cramping and pain associated with an upset stomach. Since most stomach infections are bacterial issues, ACV is excellent for relieving the effects of gastrointestinal inflammation, due to its natural antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties.

""

10. Fermented Foods

When cramps strike and your stomach feels sore, the chances are that you’re dealing with a bacterial imbalance in your gut. Our gut biomes, the trillions of live bacteria living in the gastrointestinal tract, rely on a delicate balance of good bacteria to maintain GI health.

When we experience a bacterial infection, the imbalance causes gas, bloating, cramping, and pain in the gut. Eating fermented foods will help to resolve the bacterial imbalance, restoring biome health.

Fermented foods contain probiotic bacteria and prebiotic fiber, which is the favorite food of your gut biomes. Sauerkraut and kimchi are excellent examples of fermented foods that come packed with both prebiotic fiber and probiotic bacteria. Eat one or two servings of these foods during the day, and you’ll notice your symptoms start to dissipate.

Avoid buying commercially produced sauerkraut and kimchi. These brands include preservatives and sugars that destroy the beneficial bacteria, rendering it useless at resolving your stomach pains.

""

11. Cultured Dairy

Similar to fermented foods, cultured dairy products are another source of beneficial probiotic bacteria. These bacteria are vital for maintaining optimal gut health and eliminating harmful bacteria from the digestive system.

Dairy products like organic Greek yogurt, kefir, and raw cheese contain similar probiotic bacteria as that which you find in fermented foods. Adding them to your daily diet, along with other foods like kimchi, helps to restore and maintain the balance of beneficial bacteria in your gut, allowing your biomes to thrive.

Once again, it’s vital that you choose organic products. The regular dairy products found in your supermarket undergo and high-temperature process, known as UHT that kills the bacteria. As a result, most store-bought commercial brands are full of sugar and lactose and no beneficial bacteria. Eating these foods will increase your symptoms of stomach pain instead of providing relief.

""

12. Raw Honey

When your stomach starts to feel sore, turn to one of nature’s best antibacterial foods to soothe your cramps, gas, and pain. Raw honey comes from the hives of honey bees and undergoes no treatment process before bottling. As a result of the lack of filtering, raw honey retains all of the beneficial bacteria and antibacterial properties of this superfood.

Raw honey comes packed with polyphenols, which are potent natural antioxidants that provide an anti-inflammatory effect in the gut. Commercial honey manufacturers filter their product to remove the pollen, wax, and royal jelly – rendering the product as nothing more than a slow-digesting source of sugar, which is terrible for your stomach.

However, raw honey retains all of these beneficial materials, helping you to soothe the effects of cramping, gas, and bloating. We recommend that you try Manuka honey, which originates from bees that collect the pollen from the Manuka tree. This honey has a dark color and rich flavor. Eat a tablespoon in the morning and afternoon to benefit from the energizing and healing effect of this superfood.

""

13. Green Tea

Drinking green tea can help to reduce your stomach pain symptoms. Green tea contains potent polyphenol catechins, known as EGCG. Epigallocatechin Gallate has excellent anti-inflammatory properties that benefit the gastrointestinal tract, helping to soothe the symptoms of bloating, gas, and pain associated with a sore stomach.

However, it’s vital to understand that not all green tea products are equal. If you go to the supermarket and purchase one of the cheaper brands available, then you’ll notice plenty of dust in the bottom of your teacup after finishing the beverage. This dust is a sign of low-grade green tea, and the EGCG count in these products is far inferior compared to premium green tea products.

It’s for this reason that we recommend you drink matcha. Matcha is a powdered tea product made from the crushed whole tea leaves. As a result, your tea contains higher levels of EGCG and far better anti-inflammatory properties.

""

14. Avoid Lying Down

When we feel sick, it’s a natural tendency to want to lay down on the couch or in bed. However, you may find that lying down increases your symptoms of a sore stomach. When the stomach and upper back are lying down in a flat position, it allows stomach acid to place pressure on the esophageal sphincter.

As a result, you may find that you get bouts of stomach acid entering your lower esophagus, causing further symptoms of discomfort that make you feel worse. If you do have to lay in bed or on the couch, then try to keep your upper body elevated at a 30-degree angle to prevent acid reflux.

Stack some pillows behind your back to increase the elevation. Try to avoid eating and drinking before going to bed, and if you can, try to sleep in an elevated position that prevents stomach acid from entering the esophagus, causing symptoms of heartburn.

""

15. Baking Soda

When you start to notice symptoms of a sore stomach, try the baking soda remedy. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda into 6-oz of water, and drink it won after the fizzing stops. Drinking this tonic helps to reduce acidity in the gut, neutralizing the excess stomach acid that causes symptoms of bloating, gas, and discomfort.

Baking soda gets its alkaline effect by producing carbonic acid in the stomach after drinking. This carbonic acid helps to neutralize indigestion and acidic imbalance, returning the stomach to a healthy state.

To improve the efficacy of this remedy, we recommend that you add a tablespoon of pure lemon juice to the tonic. The limonoids in the lemon juice provide an anti-inflammatory effect, and they help to increase the conversion of carbonic acid in the gut.

This combination of ingredients also helps to enhance liver secretion and mobility of the intestines, relieving the symptoms of gas and bloating.

""

16. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is effective for relieving the symptoms of cramping, bloating, and gas associated with stomach pain. This spice contains potent antioxidants that reduce gastrointestinal inflammation and irritation. The polyphenol antioxidants found in cinnamon also help to reduce acidity in the stomach, neutralizing any excess stomach acid.

If you have any symptoms of indigestion and heartburn, adding a few sticks of cinnamon to a cup of matcha or green tea and drinking it down may help to relieve these issues. It’s essential to start eating as soon as possible after recovering from the effects of a stomach bug. Restarting your digestive system requires that you use beneficial foods to give your gut biomes something to work with that won’t further diminish their delicate state.

Adding cinnamon powder to some sauerkraut is an excellent way to take advantage of the prebiotic fiber on offer in the sauerkraut, and fortify it with the anti-inflammatory effect of cinnamon.

""

17. Cloves

When your stomach starts to turn, and you feel the effects of a stomach bug beginning to take hold of your body, turn to cloves for some relief from your symptoms. Cloves contain polyphenol antioxidants that help to reduce symptoms of inflammation in the GI tract and stomach while reducing acidity.

The antioxidants found in cloves also help to increase gastric secretions which eliminate any digestive discomfort, killing off any invading bacteria while decreasing pressure in the stomach. Adding cloves to your cup of green tea can also assist with removing any symptoms of nausea while preventing vomiting.

You can also mix ground clove powder with raw honey, and eat it before bed to reduce symptoms of nausea and cramping associated with the condition. Clove tea also helps to stop any signs of heartburn, and it’s a good idea to drink green tea with cloves along with your first meal after recovering from your stomach bug.

""

18. Turmeric

This spice, also known as Indian saffron, has potent anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric is a popular spice used in cooking, and it turns food a distinctive yellow color. The yellow coloring of turmeric is so dominant that some clothing manufacturers use it as a natural dye.

When used in food, turmeric provides an anti-inflammatory effect to the stomach, reducing symptoms of nausea, gas, and bloating. The spice also kills off any invading bacteria, helping to reduce the symptoms of a stomach infection.

Turmeric gets its potent anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties from the active ingredient curcumin. Unfortunately, curcumin only accounts for 3-percent or less of the total flavonoids and polyphenols found in the spice. Curcumin also has low bioavailability, meaning that your gut does not absorb most of what you consume.

However, research shows that combining turmeric with a sprinkle of black pepper helps to improve bioavailability by up to 3,000-percent. Drink a teaspoon of turmeric powder mixed with black pepper in 6-oz of water to provide relief from your symptoms.

""

19. Basil

Basil is a favorite herb used in Italian cooking. However, basil also has potent medicinal benefits for helping to assist with removing the digestive discomfort and pain associated with a stomach infection. Basil gets its potent healing properties from eugenol, and polyphenol found in the herb that reduces gastrointestinal inflammation while soothing gas and bloating symptoms.

Eugenol also helps to reduce excess stomach acid, providing a soothing effect. The linoleic acid found in basil also helps to reduce intestinal inflammation. While eating whole basil leaves is a great way to take advantage of the healing properties of the herb, we recommend that you purchase some holy basil essential oil.

Don’t eat the oil, as it may increase your symptoms. Instead, add a few drops of the essential oil to a carrier like coconut oil, and then rub it into the skin around your stomach. The oil penetrates the layers of the skin where it enters the bloodstream.

""

20. Licorice

Chewing on licorice root may also help to relieve your symptoms of stomach pain. Licorice root contains polyphenol antioxidants that reduce symptoms of nausea and vomiting, which is why it’s such a useful food for relieving the symptoms of seasickness.

However, we don’t recommend that you eat licorice candy. While this treat tastes delicious, it’s full of sugars that will increase the intensity of your symptoms. Chewing on fresh licorice root is the best way to soothe symptoms of gastritis, while soothing stomach pain and inflammation related to peptic ulcers.

Drink a few cups of licorice root tea throughout the day when you feel your symptoms increasing. Licorice root tea is readily available from your favorite health food store, and it’s relatively inexpensive.

If you can’t find licorice root tea, then mixing a powdered form of the herb with some boiling water will provide the same anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effect as the tea.
