A sprained knee is when there is an injury to the ligament and joint. They both work together to allow movement of the leg. When there is an injury to the knee, the knee is unable to move properly. It will cause pain and swelling.

In order to alleviate the pain from a sprained knee, a person would have to go to rehabilitation, but there are eight home remedies you can do at home. You can save a lot of money by using home remedies while going to rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation is expensive, but if you try home remedies in addition, your sprained knee will heal much quicker. When you try home remedies, you have to take your time and be patient because you don’t want to do additional damage to your knee.

A knee sprain can contribute to arthritis. That’s why it’s important to do home remedies because when that happens, you want to know how to alleviate the pain.

1. Rest is a home remedy to alleviate a sprained knee.

Resting the knee allows it to heal and doesn’t put pressure on it. You don’t want to do strenuous exercise when you have a sprained knee because it’ll take longer to heal in addition to it being painful.

You shouldn’t even walk on it because it’ll be painful. It may be difficult for you to rest when you have been active for so long. The other leg can be exercised during this time. Just because one knee is injured doesn’t mean you can’t exercise the other one. You can ride an exercise bike or raise your leg up and down.

When you ride an exercise bike, the other leg needs to be in a position where it’s not affected. It should be in a still position. By exercising the other leg, it stays strong, so when the other knee gets back to work, you’ll have two strong knees and legs.

2. Icing the sprained knee is an effective home remedy.

Placing ice on the knee will reduce swelling and inflammation. In some cases, it will help with the pain.

When you ice, place the ice pack between a towel, so that you don’t have it directly on your skin. You could get frostbite. When icing, do it for 10 to 15 minutes every few hours for a few days.

Heat shouldn’t be applied to knee pain. Some people say to use a combination of cold and hot therapy, but in this case, cold therapy is the best. Heat therapy will relax the muscles, but when you have a sprained knee, the ligaments and joints are affected, not the muscles.

Another thing to remember is when you ice your knee, make sure you’re in a warm room because the ice will make you cold. You want your knee pain and swelling to go away, not to catch a cold.

3. Compression is a home remedy for a sprained knee.

Compression helps stop the swelling in a sprained knee. Wrap the knee lightly with a bandage, but don’t obstruct circulation.

When wrapping your knee and the pain increases, loosen the bandage. Check the bandage every day to see if the swelling has gone down. Once the swelling goes away, you don’t have to wrap it anymore.

When you compress your knee, you don’t want it too tight. Some people feel if they compress it tightly, it’ll make the swelling go away, but that’s not the case. It’ll make the swelling and pain increase.

There is no need to put yourself in extra pain so that you can get rid of a symptom. Your sprained knee will get worse instead of better. Compression has a purpose and its purpose is to alleviate swelling in a good way, not a bad way.

Don’t stop working out on the good leg because the other leg’s knee is bad. It needs to remain strong while you’re trying to heal your injured knee. There are exercises you can do while sitting down.

The medicine will work much better when taken this way. They have different formulas of Tylenol and Ibuprofen, so make sure you purchase the correct one for your sprained knee.

For instance, they have a Tylenol PM. Don’t take that during the day, especially if you have somewhere to go. You probably won’t be able to drive while you have a sprained knee, but if you do be careful when it comes to over-the-counter-medications.

You want to choose the correct one. If you do happen to drive, it’ll make you drowsy if you use the wrong formula. All pain medication should be taken when you are at home and have no place to go.

Since you have a sprained knee, make sure you purchase the cold analgesic formula. This can be used in addition to icing the knee. Analgesics are short term solutions and should only be used until the pain goes away.

They won’t help reduce the swelling or inflammation. They are more of a pain-relieving solution. It is a good idea to use topical analgesics when you don’t have to go outside because since they are medicated, you want to remain in a warm area. In the wintertime, it can open your pores if you decide to put it on and go outside. This can lead to a cold.

You may fall down and injure yourself if you don’t have assistance. Epsom salt comes in many fragrances, so it’s up to you on which one you want. The ones that have fragrance have essential oils in them, which are good for a sprained knee.
