Many people experience back pain, and most will experience it at least once in their lives. Some people live with chronic back pain that can become so severe that it makes it hard for them to move or function properly.

There are many types of back pain and many things that cause it. Lower back pain is the most common type of back pain and can also be the most severe. Knowing the cause of back pain is important because it can help identify the underlying conditions or injuries that are responsible for the pain and help doctors determine the best treatment options for their patients.

Lower right back pain is a common complaint of many people, and the causes can be mild or severe. The sooner the cause of the pain is identified, the sooner a patient can begin treatment. Most types of back pain can be treated with medication, but others may require more invasive treatment procedures.

1. Disc Problems

The discs in the back help cushion the spine and prevent the bones from grinding together. They can, however, break down over time and become inflamed. When this happens, a person can experience back pain in many different areas.

There are many different types of disc problems, and issues, and a doctor or chiropractor can typically diagnose them pretty easily. Bulging discs, herniated discs, slipped discs, and generative disc disease are a few of the most common types of disc disorders that can cause pain in the lower right back. Some disc problems get better on their own or with rest. Others require physical therapy, surgery, or both.

Disc problems can be caused by an injury, wear and tear, or other back problems. They can affect people of all ages but are more common in athletes and the elderly. Many people who suffer from disc problems are more prone to them throughout their lives.

2. Inflammation

Inflammation in the back can cause pain and discomfort in many different areas. Inflammation can be caused by a number of things, including, infections, injuries, accidents, fractures, sprains, and muscle tears.

The inflammation occurs when the area becomes swollen. The tissue can press against nerves and lead to pain. Inflammation can often go away on its own, but depending on the underlying cause, it may require medical treatments. Surgery and physical therapy are two options for back inflammation, but rest and hot and cold therapy can also help.

In many cases, the inflammation does not occur in the exact area of the pain. Some other treatments for back inflammation include medications and chiropractic methods. If there is an underlying cause of the inflammation, it must be treated as well, or else the inflammation will reoccur. A doctor can diagnose the underlying cause and help the patient choose the right treatment.

3. Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a condition that causes the spinal canal to narrow. This puts pressure on the spine and nerves and can cause pain in the lower back and on either side. In addition to back pain, the condition can also cause the legs and arms to go numb. Some people with spinal stenosis have no symptoms until it becomes severe.

It is more common in people who are over the age of 60, but it can affect people who are young also. Osteoarthritis is the main cause of spinal stenosis, but other spinal changes and common wear and tear can also lead to it. It left untreated; it can worsen over time.

Common treatments include medications and spinal fusion surgery to correct the problem and improve spine stability. Some people experience neurological problems caused by spinal stenosis. If this occurs, surgery may be recommended. Most people see an improvement with medication and do not need surgery.

4. Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis occurs when a bone in the spine slips forward and out of place. This usually occurs in the lower back and can cause pain on either side or in the middle. There is also a degenerative form of spondylolisthesis that is caused by arthritis.

Arthritis weakens the joints and ligaments that keep the spine aligned, and it can slip out of place more easily. It can also cause a disc to slip out of place. Family history can put a person at at-risk, and some people are also born with a congenital disability that causes the condition.

Physical activity and certain jobs can also increase the risk of the condition. It can affect people of all ages, but men are more prone to it than women. People who play sports are more susceptible as are the elderly. The condition is treated with anti-inflammatory medications and steroid injections.

5. Accidents

Any injury to the back has the potential to cause pain in the area. Car accidents slip and fall accidents, sports accidents, and even twisting or turning the wrong way can cause an injury. Some accidents can cause severe injuries that lead to chronic pain, and others just cause pain that only lasts for a short time and then goes away on its own.

If you have been in an accident and have back pain, it’s important to seek medical attention to rule out a more serious injury. Many injuries can become more severe without prompt and proper treatment, and some can even lead to paralysis.

A proper diagnosis is also essential to getting the right treatment. Some accidents do not cause pain immediately, and many people experience pain and don’t realize it’s caused by the accident. Accidents are one of the leading causes of back pain, especially pain in the lower back.

""

6. Muscle Spasm

Muscle spasm can occur in any muscle, but they are common in the muscles in the lower back. People who lift weights for work or leisure are likely to suffer from muscle tears and sprains, which often lead to muscle spasms. Muscle spasms feel like cramps.

The muscles cannot completely relax and may shake or twitch into a tight pull. Muscle spasms are not painful to some people and may just feel like a strange sensation. They can happen once or over and over again in the same spot. Some people experience intense pain caused by muscle spasms and are unable to move due to them. Sometimes, moving into a different position or attempting to flex the muscles can stop the spasm.

Many people ignore muscle spasms until they become painful or chronic. Medications such as muscle relaxers are often prescribed to help stop the spasms. Resting and using hot and cold therapy can also help relieve the pain or stop the spasms in general.

""

7. Fracture

A fracture may seem like a big deal and something you would definitely feel when it happens, but many people suffering back fracture and aren’t immediately aware of it. Fractures can be so small that it takes a while to experience any pain or complications.

If the fracture occurs in the lower back, the pain may be felt on one side or both. Fractures can heal on their own in people who are healthy, but the elderly, and people who suffer from bone problems may require surgery or treatment. It is important to rest if you have a fracture, so the fracture does not get any worse or turn into a complete break.

Depending on the location of the fracture, surgery may require immediately. Fractures can also cause muscle pain and weakness and may even lead to other back problems. Doctors will need to do an X-ray to confirm the location and severity of a fracture.

""

8. Arthritis

Arthritis is a common cause of pain throughout the body and one of the leading causes of back pain. Arthritis occurs when the joints become inflamed. It can cause stiffness, pain, and swelling in the area. Because the joints in the lower back are used so often, it’s not uncommon for arthritis to occur here.

Arthritis typically affects the elderly, but it can affect people of any age. Athletes are more susceptible to arthritis because of the use of their joints. Some people have arthritis and experience no symptoms. Many people experience minor symptoms that are only occasional. If the arthritis is severe, it may make it hard for the patient to move comfortably.

Medications can help relieve the inflammation and other symptoms and is the most common treatment for any type of arthritis. Exercise can also help keep the joints working and moving properly, so there is less swelling and pain.

""

9. Strains and Sprains

One of the most common causes of lower back pain on the right-hand side is sprains and strains. Injuries to the tissues around your lower back may cause symptoms of pain and bruise. Most pain symptoms that occur due to trauma subside in a few days, with bruising lasting up to several weeks.

There are numerous reasons why you could sustain an injury to the lower back. slip-and-falls are a common injury, along with playing contact sports where a player may cause damage during a tackle. The injury causes immediate pain and symptoms of inflammation in the affected area.

Sprains are also another common cause of injury to the lower back. Once again, there is a multitude of causes for the injury, including lifting heavy objects or sleeping in the wrong position. Whatever the reason for your injury, you should seek medical advice to ensure there are no further complications to other areas of the body.

10. Radiculopathy

Radiculopathy describes a medical condition where compression or inflammation occurs in the root of the spinal nerves. This condition may result in pain in the right-hand side of the lower back. If a nerve traps in-between the discs of the spine, it can result in a loss of feeling in the affected limb. Many people that experience the onset of radiculopathy notice that they start to lose feeling in their legs.

In mild cases, the patient may recover their sense of feeling in the lower back and limbs with rest. However, in some severe cases, the damage may result in permanent loss of feeling in the limbs. A herniated disc is the most common cause of the condition, and many people with this disorder require extensive physiotherapy to help them recover from the condition.

Anti-inflammatory medications and painkillers may provide the patient with some relief, but they do not provide a permanent solution to the problem.

""

11. Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

Patients who experience the onset of intervertebral disc degeneration notice a slow decline in the health of the spine. The condition typically affects the lumbar and thoracic regions of the spine, and patients will see the onset of pain symptoms occurring as the disease progresses.

IDD is similar to arthritis and spondylosis in its effects on the spine. Patients with the condition find that they may start to experience pain from the joints of the spine rubbing together. The disorder causes the discs in the spine to wear away, exposing the vertebrae to bone-on-bone contact. As a result, the patient may start to experience pain symptoms when rotating the spine.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for this condition. Patients diagnosed with IDD require physiotherapy to help them maintain a range of motion in the joints in the spine. IDD typically occurs in individuals over the age of 60-years old. It’s a natural part of the aging process as the skeletal system starts to leach calcium from the bones.

""

12. Infections

Patients that are dealing with kidney disease or infections that attack the kidneys may also start to experience pain on the right side of the lower back. The kidneys act as the body’s filter for the bloodstream. The organ cleans up the blood, removing toxins and fluids to keep the bloodstream in balance.

When a pathogen attacks the kidneys, it results in inflammation of the organ. As a result of the swelling and antibodies attacking the tissues in the kidneys, the patient starts to develop pain symptoms. The intensity of the pain symptoms generally depends on the type of pathogen responsible for the infection.

Bacterial infections of the kidneys are far more severe than viral infections. As a result, the pain symptoms from a bacterial infection may be more prominent, and they may last longer. Patients require treatment with antibiotics to clear the infection and return the kidneys to health. Most patients make a full recovery with no lasting damage to the kidneys.

""

13. Endometriosis

Endometriosis describes a medical condition where the patient experiences abnormal tissue growth in the pelvis. The tissues that usually grow inside the uterus start growing in other regions of the pelvis. As a result of the condition, the patient may begin to experience severe pain in the lower right-hand side of the pack, as well as in the pelvis. This condition can become life-threatening if the patient does not seek immediate treatment.

If left undiagnosed and unmanaged, the pain symptoms will continue to intensify. Doctors will require the patient to receive surgery to reverse the effects of the condition and stop the pain. There is no cure for the condition, and affected individuals run the risk of developing PID, pelvic inflammatory disease, as a complication of endometriosis.

Some patients can get away with using hormone replacement therapy to manage their condition. However, in most cases, the patient has little other option but to take the surgery. As a result, they run the risk of getting an infection post-surgery that could place them in a life-threatening position.

14. Sitting for Long Periods

Read any health publication, and you’ll see that sitting is now the new smoking. Remaining in a seated position for lengthy periods can reduce the health of your hip flexors. These tendons are responsible for maintaining the structural integrity of the hips. As a result of sitting for prolonged periods in a chair, the hip flexors shorten.

The shortening effect on the hip flexors starts to pull on your lower back. As a result of the situation, you start to experience pain symptoms on the right-hand side of your lower back. Millions of people are dealing with this problem. Many people sit in an office chair for hours during the day and then return home to sit on the couch and relax in front of the TV.

As a result, the hip flexors become dysfunctional, causing symptoms of lower back pain. The patient requires physiotherapy and regular stretching to recover the health of the hip flexors and make the symptoms of lower back pain subside.
