An incredibly annoying condition where the body is caused to urinate more frequently than would be considered the norm, polyuria is a something that can be annoying at the best of times and completely miserable at the very worst of times.

Each time a person with polyuria urinates they pass an incredibly high volume of urine, something that they wouldn’t normally see happening. The amount of urine specifically is measured at more than 3 liters a day, which is up to three times higher than the usual daily output of urine for an average adult, which is usually anything between just one and two liters of urine.

One of the most common signs or symptoms of both kinds of diabetes, type 1 and type 2, polyuria can lead to things like seriously severe dehydration. If dehydration is left untreated, problems with kidney function can occur.

Here are 8 of the most common symptoms of polyuria.

1. Polydipsia

Polydipsia is the name given to a condition that causes excessive thirst. Sometimes this can be a real thirst that needs to be quenched, perhaps because of external factors such as a hot and dry climate, but it can also be due to a misinterpreted thirst.

There are many types of psychiatric conditions which can cause a person to believe they need to drink more than usual, or to feel as though they are constantly incredibly thirsty. These mental conditions that bring on polydipsia seem to affect middle-aged women more than anyone else, especially those who have an unusually nervous disposition or those who have very anxious characteristics.

When you consider that polydipsia is the name given to a condition that causes excessive thirst, it really isn’t too hard to understand how polydipsia can be a symptom of polyuria. Quite simply, the more liquid that leaves the body, the more water the body needs to replace it.

2. Frequent urination

The most common and widely understood symptom of polyuria can also be the most annoying for all those with the condition. A frequent need to urinate, or at least the sensation that you need to urinate, can be so frustrating to have to deal with on around the clock basis.

Everyone can remember a time from their life where they’ve had to do their best not to have a little accident. A time when they’ve found themselves in the center of an unknown city, surrounded by hundreds of buildings that contain thousands of toilets, but not a single one available for them to use.

The need to urinate builds and build and faster you start to head in the direction of a public facility, the more urgent the need urinate becomes. That’s just how it goes and everyone can remember a time in their life where they have just about made me or had a close call.

3. Polyphagia

Another symptom of polyuria can be increased appetite. The worrying thing about this symptom is that increased appetite can be a red flag, a warning sign and a tell-tale indicator symptom of the presence of diabetes, and so this needs to be monitored carefully.

The lack of water in the body due to the frequent urination is also a lack of water provided by food sources. There are so many foods that we regularly eat that are made up mostly of water. Cucumbers, for instance, are about 90% water in terms of their make up and so the amount of water that we get from our food shouldn’t be overlooked.

The fact that the water and nutrients are being drained from the body results in an increased appetite. An increased appetite can lead to other problems developing as well, such as diabetes as mentioned previously. In the human body, every cause has an effect and so it isn’t hard to see how symptoms like this can be so problematic for people to deal with.

4. Tiredness and fatigue

Another symptom of polyuria that can have serious implications for someone’s enjoyment of life and day to day function is found with tiredness and fatigue. This tiredness stretches way beyond the normal feeling of tiredness that most people deal with on a daily basis.

It can manifest as a complete inability to even open your eyes in the morning or find the energy to get up and go, as it were. The implications for people’s lives can be varied and complicated, with some people finding that they are unable to go to work due to their extremely fatigued state.

Keeping up with social activities and planned events can also be difficult to manage for someone with fatigue, as the last thing they feel like doing is getting ready to go out.

This can lead to isolation and loneliness, which are two symptoms not found on this list which should maybe at least make the appendages, if not being worthy of their very own section.

5. Dizziness

Dizziness is such a strange symptom for anyone to feel or experience, no matter how and when it comes on. Feeling dizzy can cause all sorts of problems for people, such as making it hard for them to walk around or to even get to the toilet without staggering or trying to find their feet. This can be extremely problematic when you have polyuria, as going to the bathroom and the toilet becomes something that you spend half your day having to do.

A lot of people with polyuria who find themselves affected by dizziness choose to use a bedpan or chamber pot to urinate in, to save themselves from the potential of covering their own legs in their urine and the risk of peeing all over the carpet.

These are all things to consider if you have polyuria and dizziness with it. No one wants to try and go to the bathroom whilst feeling dizzy, trust us.

6. Weight loss

The term weight loss is something that only has positive connotations in the minds of some people, such as the modern-day obsession of losing weight and dropping pounds. Of course, people who are overweight should strive to lose weight in any way they can, unless that way just so happens to involve an illness like polyuria.

Becoming ill is never a good method to lose weight, no matter who you are and where you are in life. The weight loss that occurs as a result of polyuria can be described as anything but healthy weight loss. The excessive urination is responsible for this, as the body continuously tries to flush itself of all the water content in the body.

The upshot of this fast-tracked waste disposal system is that any minerals and nutrients from a person’s diet are also fast-tracked out of the body, meaning that muscle and fat storage are bypassed.

7. Blurred vision

Blurred vision is another difficult symptom that can occur as a result of polyuria. Imagine looking at a sign on the road and seeing two of that sign. Sometimes the only way to relieve yourself from the troubling symptom of blurred vision is to close your eyes altogether and succumb to the draining effects of an illness like polyuria.

The body is in a constant state of waste expulsion and so many of the other common functions find themselves compromised to the point of underperforming or not performing at all. Blurred vision can make it extremely difficult to go about living their daily lives, whether that be in the context of a leisure environment or even just in terms of socializing and generally functioning as a well human being.

Seeing double would only really be something to be celebrated if it came to looking at a hundred dollar bill or Ariana Grande maybe. In those cases, two is always better than one.

8. Slow wound healing

As the body piles, all of its resources into expelling urine from the system on a seemingly never-ending basis, other functions that people take for granted may be compromised or at least may struggle to keep up with the demands of daily life.

One of these functions is the body’s incredible ability to heal wounds by itself. Whereas a person without polyuria may be able to see their body heal the wound right before their very eyes, someone with polyuria may find that the process is slowed down or even stopped altogether. As well as making the wound last longer, this also increases a person’s risk factors and likeliness of developing infections.

This list of the most common symptoms associated with polyuria might not affect absolutely everyone, but it is very likely that someone with polyuria will experience at least a good proportion of the various examples listed here.
