Polyuria is most often brought on as a consequence of and a result of drinking far too many liquids. Most notably, polyuria can be brought on when a person drinks too much water and especially fluids which contain things like caffeine and alcohol.

Typically resulting in frequent and large amounts of urine, polyuria can also be a sign that points to certain types of diabetes, making it a bit of a red flag. It might seem unfair to label caffeine and alcohol as two of the biggest offenders in this case, but let’s face it, you’d have to travel far and wide to find an article that listed excessive amounts of caffeine and alcohol as positive contributors on a person’s health.

Remember though, we’re not talking about complete abstinence is the way forward here, just the assurance that you’re not drinking any fluid, particularly those containing caffeine and alcohol to excessive levels.

1. Kidney disease

Just as polyuria can be a sign of kidney disease, kidney disease can be a precursor to the development of polyuria. Determining which came first isn’t quite as difficult as the old chicken and egg argument, but it can be quite challenging and here’s why.

Diagnosing kidney failure or kidney disease can take a little bit more time to establish when compared with diagnosing polyuria. The reason for this is that the symptoms of polyuria are probably a little easier to spot.

The implication of this is that a person may present to the emergency room or the doctor’s surgery with polyuria. This might uncover the fact that they have kidney disease, even if the kidney disease was already there and actually the cause of the polyuria.

It’s easy to see how it can get complicated and the best thing to do, regardless of which came first, is to seek medical advice at the earliest possible opportunity.

2. Liver failure

Yet again we come to something so serious that it seems a little strange to find it in a list of potential causes for another condition. The liver can be incredibly resilient and somehow manages to power on through the abuse that we tend to give it.

Many people take their lives for granted, providing it with inadequate water and way too much harmful stuff for it to deal with, The resilience of the liver means that this is generally okay, until it isn’t, which is when the proverbial doo-doo starts to head towards the fan at a rate of knots.

When a person suffers from liver failure, there can be a number of things that come along with it, and polyuria is just another one to add to the list. You may be of the opinion that the liver failure is of more significance than the polyuria and you may well be right in thinking that, however, it has to be said that every cause has a knock effect.

3. Medications

Unfortunately, the very things that have been designed and produced to help us overcome illnesses, can also be the reason as to why we develop other illnesses or complications.

You only have to look at the list of potential side effects that come wrapped up with every single type of medication you can get nowadays, or consider the effects that chemotherapy has on cancer patients.

It is true that many medications, especially those that increase the rate of excretion of wastewater in the form of urine from the body, have the potential to bring on polyuria. These medications, known as diuretics are fantastic medications for treating a range of different ailments, however, their usage has to be carefully monitored to ensure that the balancing scales don’t start to tip the other way into the realms of the harmful.

It’s all a case of trial and error usually, and you get to know the effects of medications on your body over time.

4. Chronic diarrhea

Not something that anyone likes to talk about really, diarrhea is something that can be incredibly unpleasant to live through, but when we’re talking about chronic diarrhea, that experience is just ramped up to a whole new level of disgusting.

As the body tries to expel itself of all those nasties, on a seemingly endless basis that sees you rushing back and forth to the restroom, the condition known as polyuria can be brought on.

In developed countries, this can be a difficult complication to deal with, as the body clearly needs to expel itself of the excess waste and toxins that are leftover, but the threat of dehydration has to be taken into consideration as well and managed accordingly.

In developing countries, it is shocking to know that diarrhea can still be a fatal condition to suffer from and the development of things like polyuria only makes this worse.

5. Cushing’s syndrome

Something that is a little more niche in terms of its ability to bring on polyuria is the condition known as Cushing’s syndrome. The fact that Cushing rhymes ever so nicely with the word gushing is purely a coincidence, however, make no mistake, if your Cushing’s syndrome does happen to cause the development of polyuria, you will end up gushing for several days.

It always seems so unfair that people already living with a range of illnesses, conditions, and syndromes should be amongst the people that are most likely to develop problems such as polyuria, but that’s just the way it goes.

By their very makeup, these people may find that their bodies are much less able to deal with problems than a person with a perfectly healthy body would find. The only advantage that is apparent for these people is perhaps that they are already fairly used to having to deal with illnesses and the various symptoms that these illnesses present.

6. Psychogenic polydipsia

Another less understood cause of polyuria is found with what could be described as a peculiar little condition that seems to most commonly affect the demographics of middle-aged women.

These women will most often be anxious and nervous people who may not have a diagnosis of a range of psychiatric illnesses. The condition causes these people to drink water excessively, far above the recommended intake for an average person.

In an age where it seems harder and harder to encourage people to drink the advised amount of water on a daily basis, a condition like this one seems a little out of sync with society, and that’s because it is.

These people, who may be suffering from things like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, do tend to find themselves out of sync with what could be described as the norm, and their psychiatric issues manifest in a range of troubling ways, such as the need to drink lots and lots of water.

7. Hypercalcemia

We’re usually told that the majority of our health issues and problems are due to certain deficiencies that we all have. This particular cause of polyuria though is due to the exact opposite. This condition occurs when there are elevated levels of calcium within the blood for an extended period of time.

The body can only use so much calcium for things like bone growth and teeth strength at any one time, and so the excess calcium needs to be expelled from the body. The best and quickest way for the body to do that is via the process of urination.

Polyuria causes frequent urination, and the more calcium that is in the body, the more serious the case of polyuria is likely to be. Interestingly, people who have developed polyuria from this condition have shown good responses to adopting changes in their diet in an attempt to limit their calcium intake.

8. Pregnancy

You’re lying there feeling like a beached whale and finding everything about life especially difficult, whilst your spouse heads out to the store to get you some strange cocktail of fried chicken and bubble gum in order to satisfy your latest cravings.

All this is happening and the last thing you need is to develop something like polyuria. It’s the last thing you need and so that’s what you get. Simply being pregnant, particularly in the later stages, is more than enough to trigger the development of polyuria.

Most pregnant women find that they need to urinate more frequently anyway, without the presence of polyuria, and so this added condition can sometimes seem like adding insult to injury.

These 8 main causes of polyuria are incredibly varied and if nothing else, show that just about anyone has the potential to develop the condition, whether they like it or not.
