Prerenal azotemia is actually understood to be by far the most common form of kidney failure. It is certainly the most common form that is observed or ever seen in hospitalized patients. It is usually the case that any patients needing to make use of long term care facilities find themselves being commonly diagnosed with prerenal azotemia.

This is especially true if they have been diagnosed with dehydration or a lack of water intake, not that this is something that doctors typically diagnose, given that it is a cause as opposed to an actual illness.

With the condition known as prerenal azotemia, a poorly performing or complete lack of perfusion from the kidneys happens when something called extracellular fluid volume is depleted or when there is an incidence of cardiovascular disease.

There are several causes of the condition that are useful to know about, not just when it comes to treating the condition, but when it comes to preventing it as well.

1. Dehydration

This is by far the most common condition of this type of kidney failure. Dehydration is actually a very misunderstood thing to affect the human body, which is kind of crazy when you think about it.

Given that our bodies are made up of so much water, you would think that it should be ingrained in us to ensure we regularly top ourselves up. Even with the various campaigns and information we receive from the cradle to the grave though, dehydration is something that still occurs regularly and leads to conditions such as this one developing.

It would be naïve to think of dehydration as something which only occurs in places where water isn’t readily accessible, but if you have an understanding of how dehydration can cause such conditions in developed countries, spare a thought for how bad things could be in developing countries. You should aim to drink between 2 to 3 liters a day.

2. Conditions in which the heart cannot pump sufficient blood

Any condition that brings about a change in blood flow can potentially cause issues with the kidneys. When the heart’s main function is compromised in one way or another it can make an efficient and consistent supply to every part of the body a difficult thing.

The kidney’s function and performance are highly dependent on them receiving enough blood, and so things like low blood pressure or diabetes can have a hugely detrimental effect on their performance. You can use the analogy of a car if you like.

The lower and lower the amount in the gas tank decreases, the shorter the time frame in which the car will be able to drive. Now imagine if you only provided the car with a fraction of the gas it was used to using. It would probably still work for a while, but it would struggle and struggle until it eventually gave up and stopped working altogether.

3. Heart failure

When you have heart failure, the last thing you might be concerned about is your kidneys, but it’s the long-lasting effects of things like heart failure that can actually do the most damage. You regularly see people who have suffered heart failure making incredible recoveries, returning to work and exercise in quicker and quicker time frames.

It’s incredible really, but you have to keep a careful eye out for any damage that might yet to be rear its ugly head, such as kidney failure. Whether you realize it at the time or not, the fact that the heart has struggled to function will mean that the blood supply to other parts of the body will have been compromised. It’s an unavoidable element and knocks on the effect of something as serious as heart failure.

Whilst the effect on the kidneys may not be observed immediately, it should be no surprise at all if kidney failure develops later on.

""

4. Vomiting

Usually seen on a list of symptoms, rather than causes, vomiting is something that can cause this condition which might surprise a few people. Vomiting puts extreme stress on the body’s major organs and the kidneys are included in this.

Some of the body’s major functions are either set in reverse or shut down altogether as the body tries to rid itself of whatever is causing it to feel as bad as it clearly does. Vomiting is never a pleasant experience for anyone, but a serious spell of vomiting can have long-lasting implications and serious consequences for someone that might have never considered before.

If you find that your kidneys hurt during or after vomiting, it could be worth seeking the advice of a doctor for their opinion. You need to find a way to determine whether or not the vomiting could have caused damage to the kidneys, and you need to work it out as soon as possible.

""

5. Diarrhea

Another potential cause of this condition that would look more at home on a list of symptoms is diarrhea. There isn’t really a nice way to talk about diarrhea, it’s something that is grim at the best of times.

Essentially, a watery stool that is especially disgusting in terms of both its texture and its stench. Serious spells of diarrhea need medical attention, to stop diarrhea in the first instance, but to limit the effects that it has the potential to cause as well. Diarrhea is still a killer in many countries of the developing world, and it is due to its potential to bring about conditions that affect the major organs that this is the case.

It’s like a vicious cycle that combines all the major causes of kidney failure and presents them as a potent cocktail that is sure to result in miserable consequences. When you have diarrhea it becomes more difficult to remain hydrated and so it isn’t hard to see how the condition can develop.

""

6. Bleeding

Bleeding is something else that can potentially cause this condition to occur. It isn’t especially obvious at the time that bleeding will cause any significant damage to other parts of the body but it is eminently possible.

When a person bleeds, the body’s functions are primarily concerned with healing the wound as quickly as possible whilst trying to ensure that infection is prevented at the same time. It’s a pretty difficult task for the body to be sure, and so any supply of blood flow to other parts of the body can be limited or prevented, but will almost always be affected.

Research has shown that patients admitted to hospital with cuts and bleeding are also three times more likely to develop dehydration than those without cuts and bleeding. Whilst the reasons for this are unclear, the potential consequences are crystal clear. Dehydration rears its ugly head once more in collaboration with another causal factor.

""

7. Burns

The shock and the stress that a body goes into when it suffers a burn can be incredibly detrimental and damaging to a person’s health. Burns can come about in all sorts of ways from naked flames, to harmful liquids and chemicals, all the way through to burns caused by sunlight, otherwise known as sunburn.

The cause of the burn doesn’t really matter when it comes to kidney failure, it is all to do with the severity of the burn. A person who burns the skin on their fingertips whilst trying to light a candle isn’t likely to be affected, nor is someone who spills a hot bowl of soup on their lap whilst playing a balancing act with their supper.

A person who exposes themselves to the power of the sun without adequate protection though, they are far more likely to find themselves developing problems with the kidneys and other major organs.

""

8. Alcohol and drug misuse

Probably some of the only things which have the potential to cause nearly every kind of illness and ailment known to man, alcohol, and drugs could do with being blacklisted from all mankind forever.

Unfortunately, the fact that they make us feel good and are by their very nature, addictive, this is incredibly unlikely to happen, no matter the health consequences. Those health consequences and implications are troublesome at best, usually pretty dire and in many cases completely horrific.

If you thought that the short term effects of drug and alcohol abuse, namely hangovers and comedowns, were bad, then you really need to consider the long term effects, which are ten times worse. Amongst those potential implications is the development of conditions like azotemia.

That said though, the sheer variety of potential causes shows no signs of stopping, and so maybe you should enjoy that beer happily and guilt-free.
