Rubella is a type of viral infection that’s caused when you come into contact with the rubella virus. Even though the condition is less prevalent today because of the fact that people in most parts of the world have had vaccinations against getting the condition when they were younger, there are still many diagnosed cases of rubella per year – and if you yourself suspect that you might have rubella, starting treatment as soon as possible is vital.

The condition is often also referred to as three-day measles, or as German measles because of the German doctors who first described the condition – but it’s not the same thing as measles, and does not have the same symptoms or incubation period that measles does.

Some of the common symptoms of three-day measles can include a rash, sore throat, and swelling of the glands.

Here are 8 common signs & symptoms of rubella that you might experience.

1. Fever

Fever is one of the first symptoms you’ll experience when you’ve contracted any kind of illness or infection, and it can easily serve as an early warning sign that you have picked up a condition like rubella – or any other general infection depending on your symptoms. A high-grade fever that continues for a long time means that you’re almost certainly sick, but it also means that you should take immediate action to get your body temperature back down to normal.

Even though a fever serves as the body’s natural way to combat infection, a fever can also make you feel worse and it can put a lot of unnecessary stress and tension on your heart.

If you’re experiencing any fever that lasts for a long time, aspirin and paracetamol (or natural forms found in ingredients like willow bark) can be a great help to bringing your fever down. If this doesn’t work, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

2. Flulike Symptoms

The first thing that most people think of when they start to experience symptoms like a sore throat, fever and body pain is that they likely have the flu, but even though it’s usually the most common infection of the year, there are also many other types of viruses and infections out there that can manifest with symptoms that feel much similar to flu with a few symptoms added or subtracted.

If you experience flulike symptoms together with a rash, then it’s likely that you might have contracted a case of the three-day measles. You can usually trace it back to about two to three weeks after you have been initially exposed – and if you have recently come into contact with anyone who was a carrier for the rubella virus, this is very likely.

These symptoms will usually go away as soon as the initial infection gets treated.

3. Rash

A rash is one of the most characteristic symptoms of three-day measles, and it’s one of the first symptoms that can indicate which condition you are suffering from. If you experience any of the symptoms that are mentioned in this article together with a rash, the symptoms can be treated as they appear – and it’s likely that the rash will disappear as soon as the initial infection gets treated.

When you have a rash because of the rubella virus, it’s likely that the rash starts on the face. The rash then usually continues to spread to the rest of the body like the arms and legs, and then the rash will start to fade – again, usually with the face first.

The rash is best left alone, and things like scratching (even when it’s itching) can only serve to make the condition worse; itching can be treated with adding oats to a bath in order to neutralize the effect of the rash, and in extreme cases, a cream or preparation can be prescribed by a doctor to bring some relief.

4. Headaches

Headaches are common, and they happen to thousands of people all over the world – but many people don’t think of the fact that a headache isn’t just a headache. There are many different types of headaches that you can suffer from, and there are just as many different things that can cause it: In some cases, headaches are due to either physical or emotional stress, but it can also be because of a condition like rubella.

If you experience a fever, rash, and headache as symptoms, then it could be likely that you have contracted a case of three-day measles. It’s best to treat the headache as a separate symptom: Hydrate as much as possible, keep out of the light and get enough rest – you can also take routine painkillers such as aspirin to bring some relief to a headache, and it might also help the other symptoms such as a fever.

If symptoms continue to persist after this, then make an appointment with your doctor.

5. Swelling of Glands

Glandular swelling is one of the first signs that your body is trying to process toxins or get rid of the impending infection, and it could be one of the first signs of a rubella infection if you experience it together with any of the other characteristic symptoms that have been mentioned in this article. It can be a very painful and uncomfortable symptom, and the swelling can occur in any of the glands throughout the body – including the salivary glands, the glands under the arms, in the groin or in the neck.

Never press, prod or massage swollen glands; sometimes taking anti-inflammatory medication can help to reduce associated glandular swelling, and usually, the swelling will go away together with the rest of the symptoms. If symptoms continue after this for an extended period of time, make an appointment with your doctor so that it can be diagnosed and treated properly whether it’s due to rubella or not.

6. Dry and Peeling Skin

Developing a rash isn’t the only way in which a rubella infection can affect your skin; the rash can also leave the skin feeling extremely tender to the touch, and the skin might start to dry out and peel as the rash and infection starts to clear up. The best thing to do in this case is still to leave the skin alone as much as possible in order to complete the healing process – doing anything like closing up the rash can only serve to create further problems with your skin, and picking at skin that’s meant to be healing can cause an entirely different infection.

Resist the urge to scratch dry and peeling skin. Instead, a warm bath with oats might bring some relief to the itching. If it still continues, then your doctor might be able to prescribe a skin cream that helps to relieve the itch and might make it clear up faster.

7. Conjunctivitis

Infections elsewhere in the body are common when you are already battling one type of infection such as mumps or rubella. This happens because of the fact that your immune system is already compromised when getting the first infection, which will make you more likely to contract another infection from there. Just one of the potential infections that could also affect you if you are suffering from rubella is conjunctivitis, which is more commonly known as an eye infection.

Signs of conjunctivitis can include dry, red, swollen and itchy eyes – and just like the rash associated with rubella, it’s best to leave your eyes alone completely save for the application of eye drops to relieve the pain. Remember to wash your hands properly after you’ve handled any part of your body affected by the rubella rash – touching any other part of your body afterward is how cross-contamination happens in the first place.

""

8. Joint Pain

Even though a rash is the most defining symptom of three-day measles infection, joint pain is also characteristic of the condition – and this symptom can stick around for a few days or weeks even after the original infection has cleared up. Joint pain and swelling can indicate that the infection hasn’t completely cleared up, although if it continues for several weeks after this then it could indicate the presence of another condition entirely such as arthritis.

Joint pain can be brought some relief with the application of cold and heat compresses – and from there, take the anti-inflammatory medication in order to get the swelling and pain to subside. If this doesn’t help, natural anti-inflammatory compounds such as turmeric present in your diet can also help a great deal and ensure that you are more healthy overall.

Increase the amount of immunity-boosting compounds in your diet if you suspect that you might be suffering from a health condition like arthritis.
