Dysphasia, which is also known as asphasia is a language disorder, which causes a person to have a difficult time communicating. Dysphasia affects more than 200,000 Americans each year. It can be self-treated with speech therapy and stroke rehabilitation to just to name a few. Dysphasia is a moderate case of the condition, whereas asphasia is more severe.

When you have dysphasia, there are eight symptoms that you can experience. Not everyone with the condition experiences the same symptoms, but these are some to keep in mind. When dysphasia is present, the people around you will want to know the symptoms, so that they can get you the treatment that you need.

It can be difficult to express yourself when your language skills are limited. A person may be able to communicate with you through pictures. If you need help, it can be difficult to get you the medical attention that you need without knowing what’s wrong.

1. Struggling to find the right words is a symptom with dysphasia can experience.

It will take the person longer to communicate. It is up to the person he or she is speaking with to be patient and not to make the person feel uncomfortable. If the other person makes them feel uncomfortable, it will make the person even longer to find the right words. You can try to help the person to find the right words to make it easier.

Sometimes that can make the person angry because they want to talk for themselves. It may be a good idea to just let the person find their own words and be patient with them. By allowing them to communicate on their own, it’ll give them more confidence. It may be frustrating for you and the person experiencing dysphasia, but the more the person communicates, the better they will become better at it.

2. Speaking slowly or with difficulty is another symptom with dysphasia can experience.

They know what they want to say, but it just comes out slower than a normal person. As their caretaker, it is important that you be patient and allow them to communicate in their own way. When it becomes difficult for him or her to speak, they may decide to give up because they are frustrated.

You won’t be able to figure out what is really the matter with the person. It is a good idea to tell the person to take their time and that you have time to hear what he or she has to say. This will give the person the confidence to want to tell you what they have to say instead of giving up. In speech therapy, the person will have to speak slowly to get their words right. This is like a form of therapy for the person.

3. Mixing up the order of words can happen when you have dysphasia.

Even though, they mix up their words, try not to correct them so quickly because this will anger them. If you try to correct the person, be compassionate and not aggressive about it. The person is already frustrated that they can’t communicate properly. The person that they are talking to may understand what he or she is saying even though the words are mixed up.

In speech therapy, the therapist will help the person to arrange their words so that the people that they are talking to will understand them. At times, when the person is speaking you won’t be able to understand him or her.

The best you can do is just nod your head to be respectful of the person. You can even ask the person to repeat what he or she is saying. Maybe the second time around, you will understand what they are saying.

4. Making grammar errors when speaking can happen when you experience dysphasia.

A lot of people have a difficult time speaking incorrect English and don’t have dysphasia. It is just that they speak too quickly or don’t know how to say it the right way. That’s why dysphasia can be misdiagnosed. This can even happen in their writing. Speech therapy can do wonders for a person who has a difficult time talking.

The person they are talking to will understand them. It may seem as though they are talking in slang, but they just don’t know how to come up with the correct English word or put it together in the right way. It is impolite to be rude about it to the person when they have grammar issues when they speak. If you are going to help the person, be compassionate about it and let them know why it is correct to say it this way than the other way.

5. Misinterprets the meaning of what’s being said can happen when you have dysphasia.

The person who is sending the message understands what is being said, but the person with dysphasia doesn’t. When you are trying to be serious, the person may take it as a joke. When this happens, don’t get angry with the person, just explain yourself in a better way, so that the person understands what you are saying.

On the other hand, if you are saying something nice to the person, they may think that you are angry with them and get upset. If this happens too often, it is important to take the person to a medical professional because there is clearly something wrong. It is nothing that you or the person is doing wrong. The person just doesn’t understand what you are saying and taking it the wrong way. Once they receive help, they will begin to understand words more.

6. Give incorrect answers to simple questions can happen with dysphasia.

It is no fault of the person. They just don’t comprehend what the question was. In order to help the person, it is a good idea to explain the question in a simpler way. Most people when they ask a question, make it too difficult even when it’s simple. Let the person with dysphasia ask questions so that they can get the right answer.

If a teenager has dysphasia, his or her peers may make fun of them. It is best to place the student in a special class so that the person won’t feel like an outsider. When a student is taking tests, it is best for the teacher to ask the question, but explain it, so that the student understands it better. It will take longer when it’s done this way, but it will allow the student to get good grades.

7. Difficult time understanding fast speech.

A lot of people have a tendency to talk fast. They will need to learn how to talk slower to a person with dysphasia. When a person talks fast, the person with dysphasia, won’t understand what you are saying. They may shake their head to imply that they understand, but in reality, they don’t.

When you talk to a person with dysphasia, you will need to ask them if they understand what you just said. Even if they said yes, let them repeat what you said. They don’t have to repeat the entire thing, but you should have an idea that they understood what was said to them.

Since the person has a difficult time understanding fast speech, it is a good idea to have someone with him or her who understands. That way if something important is said, the caregiver can take steps to help him or her.

8. Difficulty in reading and writing is another symptom people with dysphasia can experience.

Their reading and writing skills are at a lower level than normal people. They can read and write, but it takes them longer to do it. Their writing may be difficult to understand, but they understand it. If a person is teaching them to read, they’ll have to start with a baby book.

It will take them a long time to read it, but they will finish it. Since they can read and write, their education isn’t too bad. Most people without an education don’t know how to read or write.

In school, a teenager will have to be placed in special education, so that they are not around other peers who will tease them because of their condition. When they get jobs, they may get hands-on jobs that don’t require reading and writing skills.
