Tardive dyskinesia is a very unpleasant but fairly common side effect of many different types of antipsychotic medications. These drugs are readily used in the treatment of conditions such as schizophrenia and other mental health disorders.

TD can cause sufferers to experience stiff and jerky movements of the face and body. Whilst the person is aware of the movements, these are movements that they are unable to control.

Other symptoms that a person with TD might encounter include things like blinking their eyes, sticking out their tongue or even waving their arms without meaning to do so.

Whilst it is certainly true that not everyone who takes an antipsychotic drug will get it, the development of the condition is still far too common for anyone’s liking, as when it happens, it can sometimes be permanent.

There are some drugs that are more likely to cause a person to develop TD than others, and here is a list of 8 neuroleptics which at least have the potential.

1. Chlorpromazine

A medication that is most commonly used to treat certain mental or mood disorders (such as schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, manic phase of bipolar disorder, severe behavioral problems in children), chlorpromazine is one of the antipsychotic drugs which has been found to cause TD.

Chlorpromazine can be fantastic for the people it is designed for, given that it helps them to think more clearly at times, whilst making them feel less nervous and ultimately able to take an active part in everyday life.

It has been shown that it can help to reduce aggressive behaviors and suppress the desire to self-harm. It has also been anecdotally attributed to decreasing hallucinations and things like seizures.

Whilst all of these positive effects of taking the drug cannot be ignored, given that they can make an invaluable contribution to the quality of life for many people, it has to be noted that the risk of developing TD is perhaps most potent when chlorpromazine is taken.

2. Fluphenazine

Another medication that is regularly prescribed for things such as schizophrenia, this drug has also been troublingly linked to the development of TD in some of its users.

The benefits do seem to outweigh the potential risk factors, and most users will attest to just how effective this particular medication is in allowing them to lead some semblance of what could be considered as a normal life, but those risk factors simply cannot be ignored.

It usually comes down to people asking themselves a serious question about what is most important to them.

They have to consider whether the future risk of a physical impairment such as TD is worth living with the very present and difficult symptoms of schizophrenia for an indefinite amount of time, or whether they’re prepared to take the long term calculated risk of developing TD at some stage down the line, for the benefit of having a manageable mental illness or disorder for a prolonged period of time.

3. Haloperidol

Haloperidol decanoate is a drug that is typically used for the medium to long term treatment of schizophrenia. It may be also be used in the treatment of people who have slight trouble or real difficulty in remembering to take their medications every day.

This particular medicine helps users to think more clearly, whilst enabling them to feel less nervous in a range of situations, as well as allowing them to take an active part in everyday life and all the activities and ups and downs that come with it.

It can also be useful in preventing the likelihood of suicide in certain demographics of people who are more likely to harm themselves than the majority of the population.

The fact that it has been shown to reduce aggression and the desire to hurt others is also clearly a positive, as is the fact that it can decrease or even prevent negative thoughts and hallucinations from developing at all.

""

4. Thioridazine

Another complicatedly named medication that is ever-present in the medicine cabinets of people living with a range of mental illnesses and disorders, thioridazine is something which enables users to live an active and fairly normal life, despite the mental frailty or particular condition they might find themselves living with.

The long term use of this potent and strong drug has been liked with the development of TD and in all of those cases where it has occurred, you would be hard pushed to find someone that would say they didn’t regret taking this medication for as long as they did.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing though, and it is important for people with TD induced by this neuroleptic to think back to the part of their life where they depended on the medication to be able to function normally.

It’s always a difficult trade-off to make, should a person look after their present or their future?

""

5. Trifluoperazine

This neuroleptic medication is readily and regularly used to treat certain mental or mood disorders such as schizophrenia, but it has to be noted that, like many others, it has the long term risk associated with it of users developing conditions like TD.

Users of Trifluoperazine will attest to just how effective it can be in helping them to think more clearly and feel less nervous, whilst allowing them the opportunity to take a full and active part in the rigors and routines of something like a normal everyday life.

It can help to reduce or even eradicate aggressive behaviors, whilst also working against any desire that a person may have to hurt themselves or other people.

It is pretty clear that for people suffering from psychotic and mental disorders, drugs or medications like this one can be extremely effective, but the positives always have to measure up against the negatives, and the potential negatives here are pretty significant, seeing as they include the potential to develop conditions like TD somewhere down the line.

""

6. Metoclopramide

Metoclopramide is a neuroleptic drug that is frequently used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by surgery or as a side effect to chemotherapy. It is also commonly used by some people suffering from diabetes who may have slowly functioning digestive tracts or who may have difficulty emptying their stomachs.

Treating this condition with the medication, which is known as gastroparesis, can bring about a significant decrease in symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and an uncomfortable feeling of fullness.

Metoclopramide is also regularly used in certain procedures where stomach emptying is necessary, such as certain surgical procedures. Metoclopramide works by blocking a natural substance known as dopamine, which has been found to trigger nausea and vomiting.

It has also been shown to speed up the process of the stomach emptying and encourage the necessary movement of the upper intestines. The risk of developing TD is real and worrying, but the short term relief is what people tend to choose.

""

7. Prochlorperazine

Another medication that is commonly prescribed for things such as schizophrenia, this drug has also been worryingly linked to the development of TD in some of its users.

The benefits do tend to outweigh the potential risk factors, and most users will confirm just how effective this particular medication is in allowing them to lead something like a normal life, but the risk factors simply cannot be ignored. It usually comes down to people asking themselves the question about what is most important to them.

They have to weigh up whether the future risk of a physical impairment such as TD is worth living with the difficult symptoms of conditions like schizophrenia for an indefinite and unspecified amount of time, or whether they’re prepared to take the risk of developing TD at some stage later in their life, for the current benefit of having a manageable mental illness or disorder for a finite or infinite period of time, depending on their personal circumstances and condition.

""

8. Others

The list above shows that there are a number of well known and widely taken neuroleptic medications that have the very real potential to bring about the development of TD in users.

The problem here is that, for many people, these medications are the only way that a person is able to exist in the modern world and live something that could be described as being akin to a normal life.

It ultimately boils down to a choice that people have, between taking a long term calculated risk and enjoying an active and full life in the present, or by negating the risk of TD entirely, but inhibiting the enjoyment of life by allowing the symptoms of a condition or illness to persist without regulation or management.

Unless you’ve been in that exact position yourself, it’s hard to give advice as to which path someone should take, but what is for absolutely certain is that there are risks and positives to whichever path a person decides to walk along.
