4. Scratchy Voice
When a person develops a peritonsillar abscess, it can make it difficult to do anything that requires the voice. The reason for this is because the tonsils become swollen and filled with fluid. This can block the back of the throat. At times, the lining of the esophagus can become infected with the bacteria as well. This infection can also lead to the vocal cords become swollen.
When the vocal cords are infected they may not work properly, which in turn can make it difficult to talk. When a person has a peritonsillar abscess their voice may become scratchy. It can sound rough and is sometimes referred to as having a hot potato voice. This is because the voice is a bit like a scratch. People who have a peritonsillar abscess should rest their voice as much as possible. Avoid talking when you can and let your throat heal naturally.
