5. Hormones
For women, it’s important to bear in mind that any fluctuations in the level of hormones in their body could make their gums more susceptible and sensitive to gum recession. The fluctuations in their hormone levels could occur at specific times such as menopause, pregnancy, or puberty. When a woman is in one of the aforementioned stages, she should monitor her gums for possible recession and talk to her dentist so that they can go over the potential risks of the fluctuation together.
If she suspects that a hormonal fluctuation may be causing the recession of her gumline but the progress isn’t acute enough for her to be sure, taking pictures once a week could help her tell if her gums are truly receding. This is especially important if the trigger of the hormonal fluctuation was pregnancy. While receding gums aren’t a very severe issue, the dental infections that could follow may be threatening when it comes time to deliver the baby.
