Those that rely on sleep medication in order to doze off might be at greater risk of developing serotonin syndrome. This will depend on the nature of the sleeping aid however, as some sleep pills work differently from others.
Once again though, serotonin is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that works to reduce brain activity. At the same time, it also converts into melatonin, which is known as the sleep hormone. In other words, this is another substance that can help individuals in getting to sleep, which makes it a perfect target for many sleeping aids.
