14. Eye Floaters
Some patients who are experiencing the onset of blurry vision notice floaters drifting in their field of vision. These floaters may take on the appearance of spots or lines in their field of view. Floaters will typically appear in patients older than 60 years old.
During the aging process, the eyes gel-like vitreous begins to break down and liquify. As a result of this condition, it causes tiny pieces of tissue found within the vitreous to start to float around in the eye. These floaters may begin to cast shadows on the retina, resulting in the onset of blurry vision.
Patients who notice a sudden shower of these types of floaters may be experiencing a detached or torn retina. This occurrence is a severe condition that requires immediate medical attention. The patient should make an appointment with the ophthalmologist for a diagnosis. Resolving this issue may require the use of surgical procedures or medication to help reduce the floaters and restore the health of the eyes.
