8. Swollen joints
Patients with sarcoidosis often suffer from swelling and pain in their joints. Much like with the previous symptom we covered, the ankle area is favored in the development of inflamed joints. Cases of sarcoidosis that lead to an inflammation of the joints are referred to as sarcoid arthritis.
Patients with sarcoid arthritis are often treated with NSAIDs, which is ironic since it can lead to the development of edema which we covered in an earlier section of this article. The easiest way to distinguish between sarcoid arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis is by looking at the location of the inflammation.
If it is generalized then it is likely rheumatoid arthritis. If, however, it is localized to your ankles and surrounding areas then you may be dealing with a case of sarcoid arthritis. If you are confirmed to have sarcoidosis and notice the swelling or inflammation of the ankle joints then you should report it to your doctor.
