4. Inflammation
Spastic entropion describes a form of the condition resulting from inflammation of the eyelid or dryness resulting in irritation. Patients who are experiencing this disorder may rub their eyelids frequently, and want to squeeze them shut, to relieve the symptoms.
However, this behavior will often lead to a spasm of the muscles in the eyelid. As a result of rubbing and squeezing the eyelids, patients may start to experience rolling of the inner edge towards the cornea.
The spasms may come and go every few days, or they may be permanent, causing the patient plenty of irritation. In some cases, the use of eye drops may help to lubricate the eyeball and prevent the onset of spasms. However, if the patient does not seek any form of treatment, the contractions continue, and entropion may set in permanently.
Those patients living in hot and dry areas with low humidity, who experience frequent spasms and irritation, should use eye drops daily to avoid the onset of entropion.
