4. Emotional neglect.
Another form of neglect that can lead to adverse childhood experiences is emotional neglect. This type of neglect refers to a parent or caregiver failing to provide the emotional support that a child should be receiving. Examples of emotional neglect can include a parent or caregiver not offering the affection or attention that a child needs to feel important or feel as if they are being heard; as a result, the child can end up feeling as if he or she is worthless.
Even if a child is provided with shelter, food, and his or her other physical needs are being met, he or she may be the victim of emotional neglect.
However, emotional neglect can also be associated with physical neglect; additionally, children who are emotionally neglected can also be the victims of physical abuse and verbal abuse. The results of emotional neglect can have life-long consequences.
